Thank you for your feedbackA customer hanged herself in Homebase shortly after the store opened in an early-morning tragedy, it was revealed today.The woman, who has not been named but was in her 40s, killed herself in the outdoor section of the DIY store in Maidstone, Kent.Horrified shoppers had to be ushered away from the area after her body was spotted. It is believed the woman hanged herself in the 'yard section' of the store, where plants, timber and garden equipment are on sale. Tragedy: A woman hanged herself in Homebase (file picture) Police and paramedics arrived at the store at 10am last Friday. They cordoned off the area and the woman was declared dead on site. Gavin Shepherd, 32, went to the shop to buy some paint and saw some workers comforting a colleague, who is believed to have been the first to see the body.
He said: 'They were all obviously in shock. One female member of staff was being comforted by others and you could see she had seen something traumatic.'She was shaking and some of the other staff were just holding her and telling her it would be alright.'It must be a horrible thing to see and probably the last thing you'd expect to see in a DIY store.'Another shopper said: 'One minute you were shopping and the next the police turn up and cordon off the outdoor area.'It's truly tragic that she saw no other way out than this and to pick a DIY store to do it in is at least very bizarre behaviour.'A spokesman for Homebase said: 'We can confirm that we became aware of an incident in our Maidstone store on Friday, December 10. The incident is the subject of an ongoing police investigation.'She added: The woman was not a member of the staff at Homebase, she was a customer.'She refused to confirm whether the woman had bought anything from the store or if she had used any items from the store to hang herself.
