As with the first review the AKRacing Player Gaming Chair the first thing anyone will notice is the huge box, which weighs an absolute tonne, 88x68x38cm with a gross weight of 25kg and a net weight of 22kg, Yet again I had to drag the box upstairs, no small feet. As with the first chair, when opened the first thing you notice, is all the packaging, loads and loads, everything is well packaged and padded to make sure, your new chair arrives to you without any damage, we all know how many delivery men/women can be. Slowly removing each item, starting with the star base, moving to the cushions, both back and seat, seat already has the arms attached. Getting to the bottom of the box, you get the neck and lumbar cushions and a box that contains an instruction manual, gas cylinder, Allen keys (HEX) 3 plastic sides and wheels. The chair is no push over, when it comes to building, takes some time, if you follow the instructions well, you will have no issues, getting it up and ready to game with.
Basic assembly is the same as the AKRacing Player Chair After construction, it’s time to park your butt on the new chair and start gaming, I am still 5ft 4inches but I am now 34” waist and only weigh 13stone 6lbs, lost a little weight. Faux Leather is what these chairs are made of, if you are wondering what Faux leather is, it’s an artificial or synthetic leather substitute. The frame is full metal, so you know where all the weight comes from, the only plastic used on this chair, is for the armrests, trims and wheels. The AKRacing logo is printed on the neck cushion, lumbar and the back seat towards the top, I still feel the logo should be put on the back, just for more promotion. Now there is something new with this chair a small plastic HEX thingy majiggy, see image below. First thoughts were rather simply, what the hell is this used for, reaching out to AKRacing PR Team, was told, it allows you to attach the neck cushion through the two holes at the top of the chair, interesting, but great idea, again see image to understand what it looks like in use.
Colours are very vibrant again, the foam used is not soft, but it is still very comfortable, and based on my weight, this chair will hold more, with no issues. One thing I love about these chairs are the straight backs, something we are told about all the time, straighten your back, don’t slouch, so these chairs will help with your posture. To help with your posture and comfort the lumbar cushion supports the lower back and the neck cushion support the neck. All chairs should consider adding straight backs, lumbar and neck cushions, they are really needed and a great way to help office workers and well as gamer get a better posture and stop back problems. Another part of the chair which is great are the adjustable arm rests, made from foam and protected with a rubberized coating, also grooved out so your arms can fit comfortably in the grooves, at a height suited to you. This is absolutely great for long gaming sessions or work. I don’t know why these chairs offer a 180 degree back rest, but it is handy watching movies, or 100% tested with Player Chair, adult education.
I have had the player chair long enough to find the issues, and there is only one issue, that I have found, and that is the star base, everything else is perfect, from the stitching, construction and the design, everything is built and designed to last for a very long time. But back to the star base, it’s metal construction you would think would be great, but its lack of reinforcement, makes these star bases prone to twisting, if you are likely to lean forward a lot, I found this with both the Player chair and the Octane and I would like AKRacing to take a note “Upgrade your star bases asap please”. I ask myself the same question all the time, when it comes to getting one these high end products to review, are they worth it to purchase? Well, as with everything there are three types of gamers or as the government would use three types of families, living in poverty, living within means and rich as hell. Depending on your personal circumstances, would affect your choices in life, if you can save, this could also help you choose better and maybe have a little cash to one side, for something special.
So for 229.99 you are paying a lot of money, not something you can simply say yes, I am going to buy, no questions asked, you will be looking at other factors, if you do end up buying, you will not be disappointed as-per-say, you might want to put some money to one side, just in case the Starbase twists though. If you are on a budget, save a little these chairs are not going anywhere, they will still be here, after a few months, maybe even newer versions. If you are on the very low end, poverty stricken, please do not spend money on something you can not afford just yet, save for something similar but cheaper. There is one more thing I wish to note, The AKRacing Player Chair, was also tested by myself, but I also got my partner to test it as well, her words to that chair were “don’t like it, I’ts just not comfortable” then this chair arrived got her to test it again, different result, she said “ mmmm, this is not bad, feel different to the other, I like this one”. So there has to be a change, upgrade from the Player design to the Octane, that makes the chair unique in its own right.
