It was unclear what the president was referring to or where he'd gotten information on which he based his allegations. Trump also claimed that "the same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone."

It was not immediately clear where the president had gotten these numbers. Get More GOP Tamps Down Sessions Criticism; Dems Ramp It Up Congressional Republicans are muting their criticism of Attorney General Jeff Sessions one day after a handful of key GOP officials broke ranks with him and President Donald Trump over Sessions' contacts with a Russian official. Since Sessions' decision Thursday to recuse himself from investigations involving Trump campaign contacts with Russia, critical Republicans have either supported his decision or refrained from commenting, NBC News reported. Get More at NBC News Trump Plans to Expand Immigrant Detention: Documents The Trump administration is planning to radically expand the program and facilities for the detention of immigrant families seeking asylum in the United States, according to documents obtained exclusively by MSNBC's "All In with Chris Hayes." Last month, Asylum Division Chief John Lafferty said DHS had already located 20,000 beds for the indefinite detention of those seeking asylum, according to notes from the meeting obtained by "All In."

This would represent a nearly 500 percent increase from current capacity. The plan is part of a new set of policies for those apprehended at the border that would make good on President Donald Trump's campaign promise to end the practice critics call "catch and release." "If implemented, this expansion in immigration detention would be the fastest and largest in our country's history," says Andrew Free, an immigration lawyer in Nashville who represents clients applying for asylum. Get More at NBC News Attorney Rod Rosenstein Is Next in Line to Lead Russia Probe Some Democrats worry the appointment of a Jeff Sessions subordinate to oversee an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election won't be a clean enough break from the embattled attorney general. But the veteran prosecutor in line for the job may be uniquely politically palatable. Rod Rosenstein, who faces his confirmation hearing next week for the role of deputy attorney general, was appointed top federal prosecutor in Maryland by George W. Bush and remained in the post for the entire Obama administration.

That staying power, extraordinary for a position that routinely turns over with changes in the White House, lends weight to the reputation he's cultivated as an apolitical law enforcement official. Get More Russian Dissident Survives 2nd Poisoning Attempt On an early February morning, Russian opposition journalist and activist Vladimir Kara-Murza knew as soon as he awoke that he had been poisoned. "I knew straightaway what it was because this was the second time in two years that this happened, and it began almost identically in the same way," he told NBC News. Kara-Murza, an outspoken critic of the Kremlin and Russia's president Vladimir Putin, was rushed to a hospital in Moscow. Later, he was transferred to the U.S. for more treatment and recovery. At the time of his most recent poisoning, Kara-Murza was promoting a documentary about his late friend, a fellow activist named Boris Nemtsov. Get More at NBC News Keystone Pipeline Won't Use US Steel Despite Trump Pledge The Keystone XL oil pipeline won't use American steel in its construction, despite what President Donald Trump says.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday that's due to language in a presidential directive Trump issued in January. The directive applies to new pipelines or those under repair. Sanders said it would be hard to do an about-face on Keystone because it's already under construction and the steel has been acquired. In a 1999 interview with the Washington Journal, then-Sen. Jeff Sessions expressed his concern over allegations that President Bill Clinton lied under oath, saying, “The American people believe no one is above the law.” Sessions is under fire for saying, during his 2017 confirmation hearing for attorney general, that he did not have contact with Russia during the presidential campaign; however, the Justice Department confirmed that he had two meetings with the Russian ambassador. The U.S. has hit Yemen with more than 30 airstrikes in less than 48 hours, according to two U.S. defense officials, and the al Qaeda targets killed include an expert bombmaker. As NBC News reports, the death of Mossad al-Adani, al Qaeda's emir of Abyan governorate and an explosives expert, is a "blow to al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula," according to the officials. The U.S. conducted eight strikes overnight, targeting the same areas that were hit on Thursday morning: Abyan, al Bayda and Shabwah, all in Southern Yemen. Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said the targets for all of this week's strikes have been developed over the past several months, and that AQAP has "more American blood on its hands" than ISIS and other terror groups. Get More at NBC News Costco Raising Membership Fees Costco Wholesale Corp. announced Thursday that it's raising its membership fees, as the warehouse club operator released quarterly results that fell short of Wall Street's expectations. Its shares fell more than 4 percent in after-hours trading.

Starting June 1, annual membership fees for individual, business and business add-on members in the U.S. and Canada will rise $5 to $60. Executive memberships in the U.S. and Canada will increase from $110 to $120. Overall, the fee increases will affect around 35 million members. Get More Tension Mounts Before Conflicting Trump Rallies in Berkeley A march to support President Donald Trump is planned on Saturday in Berkeley — one of dozens planned nationwide to show support for the new president. The "March 4 Trump" in Berkeley is the only event planned in the Bay Area and is one of three expected in California. Marches were previously planned in Los Angeles and Sacramento, but organizers decided to cancel those in an attempt to bolster attendance at other events. Asked if police had any plans to prevent violence between different factions of demonstrators on Saturday, Sgt. Andrew Frankel said, "The department is prepared for a number of different contingencies." Get More Judge Gives Extension to Trump Lawyers in Travel Ban Suit

A federal judge in Seattle on Friday granted a two-week extension to the Justice Department in a lawsuit alleging that President Donald Trump's immigration order is blocking efforts by legal residents to reunite with their children who are trapped in war-torn countries. U.S. District Judge James Robart, who halted enforcement of Trump's immigration order nationwide in February in a separate case brought by the states of Washington and Minnesota, said in his order that the federal government could have more time before responding to plaintiff's efforts to have the case certified as a class-action lawsuit. Get More US Snuffs Pot Fans' Plans to Party on Tribal Land A federal prosecutor has snuffed out plans by pot fans to celebrate Nevada's new recreational marijuana law by lighting up on an American Indian reservation near Las Vegas. U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden took a hard line in a letter to organizers of a weekend cannabis festival, saying federal law applies and pot smokers could be prosecuted.

The warning from the top federal prosecutor in Nevada came while several U.S. senators are airing concerns about the possibility of a Trump administration crackdown on marijuana use in states that have legalized pot for recreational or medicinal purposes. Get More Policing the Schools Across America, hundreds of thousands of school children are suspended, expelled or arrested each year. An NBC investigation shows that black students with disabilities are arrested, suspended or expelled far more often than other children. Get More Environmental Programs Face Deep Cuts Under Budget Proposal The Trump administration would slash programs aimed at slowing climate change and improving water safety and air quality, while eliminating thousands of jobs, according to a draft of the Environmental Protection Agency budget proposal obtained by The Associated Press. Under the tentative plan from the Office of Management and Budget, the agency's funding would be reduced by roughly 25 percent and about 3,000 jobs would be cut, about 19 percent of the agency's staff.
