Combat Mode, and You (AKA The Basics)

To begin with, any time you engage in combat you are going to want to enable combat mode. Combat mode allows you to make use of parry and dodge (more on that down below), and will also slightly negate the debuff you get from having shitty skills (also more on that later). Not enough of a debuff to make you better fighting, but it could save your life in a pinch. Combat mode also allows you to score critical hits, and will help prevent critical failures.

However it's important that you DO NOT LEAVE COMBAT MODE ON LONGER THAN YOU HAVE TO. Combat mode drains stamina the longer it's on, if you leave it on all the time you will tire yourself out. Think of combat mode as a fight helper. You can attack people with it off, but you stand a much better chance of winning a fight with it on.

Dodging and Parrying

So once you've enabled that combat mode, you'll be able to make use of those two modes you see down at the bottom of your screen, dodge and parry. Both are automatic based on some stats and skills (again, more on that further down), but they both are context specific. Both dodging and parrying also use of a bit of stamina, so do not rely on the defense forever.

Parrying

Parrying depends on the relevant skill, but also depends on the weapon itself. Some weapons will be able to parry much better than other weapons. The general rule of thumb is, longer weapons parry much better than shorter weapons, real weapons parry better than makeshift ones. Shorter weapons may, in some cases be faster to use, but do not rely on parrying with these. A sword will obviously parry better than a crowbar, but both are capable of it.

Dodging

Dodging relies on the relevant stat, and can be done regardless of what kind of weapon you are using. More agile people will be able to dodge easier than less agile ones. Though all are technically capable of it.

Combat Stats and Skills

One would like to think stuff like this would be self explanatory, but it's apparently not. Could technically be a spoiler if you're the kind of autist who cares about that sort of thing. Here are the relevant stats and skills involved with combat:

Stat/Skill What it effects

DX - Dodge
Melee skill - Hitting People/Parrying
Ranged skill - Shooting people
