What can I buy?

How much should I pay? Where should I go? What items should I be cautious about? What about prams, pushchairs, cots and car seats? What about recalled items? What should I do with things I've finished with? Having a baby can be a phenomenally expensive exercise. But with a bit of second-hand know-how you can save up to 90 per cent on most of your purchases. Wanting the best for your child doesn't have to mean bankrupting yourself. And worrying about the family budget won't do you or your children any good at all. Second-hand does not have to mean second-best!What can I buy?Once you catch the second-hand bug it will be amazing what you pick up. The reality is that if it's available new, it's available second-hand. To get yourself started, try visiting an NCT sale before your baby comes along to see the wide range of goods on sale. You'll find anything from bundles of baby spoons to high-tech cloth nappies. And much of it will be virtually unused. How much should I pay?

Some second-hand items will cost a tenth of their original cost or less. As a rule of thumb, you should never pay more than a third of the full price. What you pay will depend in part on luck and determination and also where you choose to buy. Jumble sales and boot fairs are the bargain basement of the second-hand world, while online auctions can be quite expensive in comparison. Certain items, such as climbing frames and cloth nappies, can command up to half of their new price if the seller knows their value. Where should I go?Friends and family are a good source of second-hand bargains. It's quick and easy and you'll probably get some freebies along the way. Charity shops tend to stock smaller, less valuable items. But if you keep a regular vigil at your favourite charity shops, you will pick up a trickle of bargains. It is, however, a time-consuming way to shop. NCT sales are the middle-class face of second-hand shopping. You may pay more, but you'll find a huge range on offer. Jumble sales are a wonderful source of toys and clothes.

They're usually phenomenally cheap and some real gems can be found. Car boot fairs are another fantastic source of bargains. You can buy anything you want from them if you're lucky, and they're rarely beaten on price. Classified adverts are great for larger items that people are unlikely to give to charity or cart to the boot fair, such as outdoor equipment and changing tables. As well as your local paper, check out Friday Ads, Ad Trader and Loot, which are all valuable sources of bargains and can be searched online. Online auctions have just about anything a parent could want and the advantage is you can buy what you want without leaving home. Goods are usually sent by post or courier. Second-hand shops are found in most parts of the country. They can be a useful source of second-hand baby items, but the shop owner, the middleman, has to make a profit, which means they will bump up the cost to you. What items should I be cautious about? You should think twice before buying certain items second-hand.

It's worth taking note of the items that can't be sold at an NCT sale as you may want to steer clear of them wherever you see them. They are:pushchairs without the British Standard sticker BS 7409 car seats mattresses baby bouncers and walkers breast pumps any mains-powered electrical items hand-knitted toys any item of clothing with a drawstring around the neck In the case of second-hand toys, look for a CE Mark. Toys approved by the British Toy and Hobby Association will also carry the Lion Mark. You should also ensure the toy is suitable for your child's age group before buying it. Check the labels on nightwear to see if they say: "keep away from fire" and "low flammability to BS 5722". If not, they may not meet the latest standards. Find out more about child safety symbols. The law says that second-hand electrical items should be tested by a competent person before being offered for sale and they must be supplied with full instructions. That includes the sale of such items at a boot fair.

Leather shoes mould to fit a child's feet. So it's not considered a good idea to put second-hand shoes on young children's delicate feet. What about prams, pushchairs, cots and car seats? You should never buy second-hand car seats. That's because they may have been damaged in an accident. The damage may not be obvious, but it could jeopardise the protection the seat will give your baby in the event of an accident. If you are buying a second-hand pram or pushchair, Trading Standards says they should comply with BS EN 1888:2003. In addition, you should look for: soundness of construction and stability a five-point baby harness (older models may have a three-point harness) brakes that work properly no finger traps and no sharp points cleanliness - make sure the fabric is clean and not worn out instructions (without instructions you cannot be sure you are operating it properly) Read our article on pushchair safety for more information. What about recalled items?Recalled products are a trickier issue.

Plenty of toys are recalled every year for safety reasons. But some items will not be returned and may find their way on to the second-hand market. If you're worried about buying such a toy, there are two ways around the problem. The simplest is only to buy second-hand items if they are still available in the shops. The second way is to check online for product return notices. Trading Standards' website at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk has safety warnings. What should I do with things I've finished with?Leaving toys or baby items to gather dust in your garage or attic is simply denying others a bargain. Give them to friends, sell them at an NCT Nearly New sale, or donate them to charity. There is virtually nothing that cannot be sold again.
