Latex mattresses with an open coil base are perfect for you if you like the feel of a traditionally sprung mattress but don’t like being able to feel the springs, simply want to enjoy the benefits of latex, or suffer from back pain. As with any type of mattress, Memory Foam mattresses and products in visco elastic foam vary in quality. Whilst there are some very good quality memory foam mattresses at very reasonable prices, be aware of extremely cheap products, as these are often made with poor quality, low density memory foam which will not give you the support or durability of good quality memory foam mattresses. Very cheap memory foam mattresses can also have inferior manufacturing processes or poor quality materials.
We recommend that you always choose your mattress from experienced and well known mattress brands so that the memory foam is of sufficient quality to keep your spine aligned as in the picture below. Most memory foam mattresses will in fact have a core that’s made of a supportive material such as springs or High Density Polyurethane. The memory foam will be layered on top. The denser the memory foam, the firmer the mattress will feel. Denser foams are more costly to manufacture and therefore are usually more expensive to buy. Which density you choose is a matter of personal preference and budget. Most visco elastic foam mattresses will come with a layer of memory foam on top of another material base. How thick that layer of memory foam is, will determine how comfortable and supportive the mattress is. A thick layer of memory foam will be more supportive and luxurious than a 20mm thick layer. As a general rule, 50mm or thicker will give an average weight adult plenty of support and will allow the memory foam to conform to the contours of the body effectively.
