Tips on rehabilitating an Ikea Poäng chair? December 28, 2014   Subscribe We have an Ikea Poäng chair. It's comfortable and the frame is in fine shape. The foam cushioning is in pretty good shape too. The fabric cover, however, is in rough shape. It's seen a lot of use and spent too much time in direct sunlight. It's (unevenly) faded and worn. Have you had a good experience replacing the cover through a third-party company? The current fabric cover reflects the mistakes of youth. We'll take better care of the next one. But where should the next one come from? Ikea sells a handful, but it would be great to replace it with something a little more visually interesting. Some of these covers from Bemz, for example, look pretty cool, although a little pricey. I've seen some on Etsy, too, though nothing that really grabbed me. One thing that gives me pause is that the options from Bemz say they do not fit our version of the Poäng, which looks like this with the folded-over headrest that does not have foam in it.

We'd be more than happy to purchase some more foam, though, if that's all it took to make it work. (In fact, we may replace the foam entirely when we replace the cover just to breathe some new life into it.) So have you found any third-party Poäng covers that you like? We might be willing to spend up to $200 for something that was durable, washable and attractive. If it was cheaper than that, we'd be very happy. We've ruled out white and very loud patterns, but beyond that we're flexible. Oh, and while we're in Canada, shipping to the U.S. is probably an option via relatives. I have hacked IKEA again, this time the Poang chair. I believe everyone owns at least one item of furniture from IKEA. In 2005, I bought my first real furniture purchase and it was from everyone's favorite Swedish super store.  I was 23, just out of college and started myI was now bringing in a "lavish" teaching salary and wanted my bedroom to have a chair.  As everyone knows, a chair in a bedroom means that you have made

it so, with my copious amounts of disposable income, I purchased the Poang Chair.  You might not know the name, but you know at least one person with this chiar in their home. Ok, so its not such a unique heirloom of a chair, but it was awesome at the time. The base model of the Poang has a basic cushion, but it has an older, better looking and more refined brother, the Webbing Back Poang.  This chair is very similar to the base with the same frame, but with a more modern style.  I already owned the frame and was ready to make a similar and arguably more stylish version. ~10 feet of 2” inch nylon strap? Heavy duty staples and gun To be honest, I don’t remember how much exactly I bought ofI know I had to go back to Joanne to get more and ended up with just the right amount.  If you do some calculations, you probably canEither way, keep your receipt!  You can always overbuy and return in a pinch. The cutting mat combined with the rotary cutter and ruler was a huge help.

I am constantly doing little projects, so this was a worth while investment.  If you aren’t doing crafts or projects often, then just use scissors and a regular measuring tool. The Expedit Shelving Unit is no longer available from Ikea, however, the is available and if it had been when I made my window benches, I would have used it because it is a little bit shorter with 4 openings instead of 5. Next you'll need at least 2 sets of Ikea Capita Legs. We got the 4 inch ones which made the window bench plenty tall. It's the perfect height for kids to be able to climb up on the bench, and for adults to sit on it.

We got 3 sets of Capita legs because we made two window benches. After stapling the quilt batting, you will repeat the step but using fabric this time. You can choose any type of fabric you want. For the window bench in our nursery, we chose  . I had previously cut it and ironed it for a smooth surface once it was stapled on. For our living room bench, we chose . I can't tell you how long it took me to decide on which fabric to use. I would suggest waiting until you absolutely fall in love with something. For more information on the storage containers/bins I chose for my window benches, look .An Ikea Poang chair is made from layers of beechwood that are glued together and steamed to form a flexible frame. If you purchase a Poang chair from a retailer, you may find there is a limited selection of replacement cushions, particularly if you seek a certain color or style. With basic sewing skills and a sewing machine, you can create your own Poang cushion for a fraction of the cost.

Use upholstery fabric to maximize the durability of the cushion. Fold 3.25 yards by 44 inches of pre-quilted fabric in half so the short ends are together. The color of this fabric does not matter because no one will see it. It will serve as the cover for the polyester cushion. Pin the ends of the folded pre-quilted fabric together. Pin one of the longer ends, the 44-inch opening and two-thirds of the other longer end together. Sew the pre-quilted fabric along the same ends where you placed the pins, using a 1-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins as you sew and cut off the excess fabric. Turn the piece you sewed right side out and insert the compressed polyester cushion that measures 115 inches by 42 inches and is 2 inches thick. You may need to fold the cushion in half to make it fit through the opening, but make sure it is flat once inside the cushion cover you made with the pre-quilted fabric. Fold in the un-sewn edges of the cushion cover you placed over the compressed polyester cusion and pin them together.

Hand-stitch the un-sewn fabric to close the cushion. Fold together 3.25 yards by 44 inches of upholstery fabric so the short ends meet. Make sure the wrong sides are facing each other. Pin the ends of the upholstery fabric together. Pin one of the longer ends, the 44-inch opening and two-thirds of the remaining end together. Sew the upholstery fabric along the same ends where you placed your pins. Use a 1-inch seam allowance and remove the pins as you sew. Turn the sewed upholstery fabric right side out and insert the covered cushion. Fold in the un-sewn edges of the upholstery fabric and pin them together. When you place the cushion onto the Poang chair frame, place the end you hand-sewed on the part closest to the seat so it does not show. If you want to create a removable cover, consider installing a zipper instead of hand stitching the upholstered cushion cover closed. J.
