Book description
The title of the book says it all. This book is about how the super rich of the early Twentieth Century spent their money. Beebe only fleetingly covers the origin of their fortunes. Therefore, the book reads more like salacious gossip rather than a non-biased look at the uber-wealthy. The writing style of the author is also difficult to follow. His vocabulary is unusual and he tries to use affluent terms. I cannot tell if he is genuine in his knowledge of vocabulary; but will give him the benefit of the doubt. His repeated use of the word magnifico is a little tiring; but it does give a grandeur to the subject. However, his constant judgement on who and who was not a magnifico seems arbitrary. The writing style is part gossip column and part narrative. Consequently, the book does not flow well and each chapter has awkward breaks. The writing smooths out later in the book when he has to provide more background information on his subjects.Beebe clearly relished in sharing company with the wealthy. He may have had a love-hate relationship with Evelyn McLean, whose penchant for jewelry he describes. In the Middle Ages, many authors wrote about the lifestyles of the nobility to demonstrate their knowledge of the culture and to perhaps find patrons who would include them in their circles. Beebe follows suit. This is most clear in his chapter on the lobster palaces - the eating and partying habits of the rich. Although the focus of the chapter is one or two scandalous parties, the bulk of the chapter knowingly describes the proper foods and beverages of the party-goers. Whether Beebe ever indulged in these celebrations is unknown.In the later half of the book, Beebe has to provide some background on his characters. The early and mid Twentieth Century ultra rich were not as well known to Americans as Carnegie, Schwab, and Morgan. The transition away from the spendthrift offspring of the robber barons to the less well-known mining fortunes was slow and gradual. Here again, Beebe passes judgement on who was a magnifico and who was not. He clearly resented many of the mining fortunes, saving particular disdain for the Unsinkable Molly Brown. He appears to enjoy telling his readers that she died penniless in an asylum. Overall, this book offers a unique insight into the lives of the uber rich. The writing style and the length of the book may detract some readers. However, Beebe writes with an authoritative, if arrogant, knowledge of the subject. Things have not changed much since he was writing. However, he may have been writing on the worst examples that society has to offer.
