Book description
I received this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. The Art of Noise is a highly interesting contribution to pop music history. Spanning 27 of the most prolific English songwriters past and present, Rachel introduces the significance of each songwriter and then explores via interview the creative process and songwriting philosophies of each of these artists. What I found most interesting in this collection of interviews is diversity of approach taken by these artists. Some start with lyrics, some with music. Some artists take a methodical, workmanlike approach to their writing, some write when and where inspiration comes. Rachel’s introductions are fascinating bits of music history. Particularly well written is the introduction to the conversation with Jimmy Page is remarkably well written. “By the age of twenty-four, Page was bored. He was a highly accomplished musician, greatly in demand, earning well, but finding little satisfaction in playing on records he was unlikely to listen to. He had an urge for a wider creativity. In Led Zeppelin it was unleashed in concert. The band’s live music defied strict categorization. The four musicians jammed with dramatic spontaneity, embracing ddiverse musical references and genre shifts from Thirties blues to Fifties rock’n’roll. The effect was a celebration of music past and present. No boundaries. No rules. It was not unusual for shows to exceed three hours. Considering that The Beatles never played beyond thirty minutes, this was phenomenal. Songs were stretched way beyond their album times and it was not uncommon for a four-minute piece to reach a crashing end over twenty minutes later.” (46) Wow, I wish I were there to see that. The introduction to the conversation with Andy Partridge is similarly masterful. I love that Rachel calls attention to Partridge’s source material in lyrics. “In ‘Snowman’ he wrote, People will always be tempted to wipe their feet on anything with ‘welcome’ written on it.” (203)At times, Rachel cannot but help himself interject political opinion where it does not add anything significant. A great example is in the introduction to the interview with Noel Gallagher. He depicts the tracks of Definitely Maybe as depicting a “Manchester drained of hope. His writing expressed a desire to flee a city broken by a decade of Thatcherism.” (391) There are other statements elsewhere talking of communism and socialism. It is undeniable that the political views of these artists railed against the conservative movement led by Thatcher. It is undeniable that their writing often expressed political opinion. This is not news and it is a component of their art. However, like Rolling Stone, I have an aversion to music journalists using these artists to reinforce a political opinion of their own and I feel that Rachel crosses into this territory on a few occasions. Let the artists and their songs evoke their messages…it inevitably is more powerful than a prose journalistic explanation that at times will water down and at times will go too far.On the whole though, great and easy read. As a fan of pop music, understanding the artistic process is something that I had not been very exposed to beyond short snippets previously.See my other reviews here!
