I cant say this isnt worth reading, or at least skimming. But, I have some problems with it.1) Vidals arrogance is really off-putting. Hes obviously very intelligent, very well-read, very perceptive, very well-known, and very popular. Good for him, but that doesnt mean he needs to be condescending. All these essays reek of: Im better than you whos reading this and all the people I talk about, except a few writers who I like, but the rest of you, Im better than.2) His book talk is often prosaic and offers little insight. Literary criticism can be delightful, but I dont want to wade through thirty pages of summaries in order to get a few bits of insight about what it is the book offers in terms of perspective on the world.3) Tying into both: too much text, not enough meat. Vidal had a spectacular vocabulary and matching command of grammar and sentence structure. But this book is 20% interesting, 80% masturbation.The essays about stuff, instead of book-talk, are the most interesting. To hear someone talking about Nixon and Reagan and describing the trajectory they put American society and government upon with piercing accuracy is fascinating.But all in all most of the pages are too much a slog.
