I read this book after watching the TV Documentary about Alex Stobbs, the young man who is a music Scholar at Cambridge, and a chorister in Kings College Choir.He also happens to have CF, which is a serious condition demanding daily meds to keep him alive, and has regular spells in hospital.The book mainly covers his determination to conduct the St Matthew Passion by Bach, a three-hour performance, with choir and orchestra, and in spite of his health he does just that. It is known that he is a very talented musician, pianist, organist, singer, composer and conductor at the age of about 21.I saw on TV, the main parts of this performance in Cadogon Hall in London, sold out, with the funds raised to do the performance and a sizeable donation to the cause of Cystic Fibrosis research. Professional orchestra musicians and highly regarded choirs came together and prepared and rehearsed with Alex, he had advice from some great names in the music world, many of whom were at the performance which was a huge success.Alex doesnt want anyone to think of him as the boy with CF, he fights to be as normal as he can, and his love of music and cricket enhance his life. His family support is also a major part of his life.I found this book very inspiring, very readable, and have managed to find parts of his TV appearances on YouTube. I will watch with interest his future achievements, and hope that he can stay ahead of his health problems for some time yet.
