Order Pella Replacement Parts Online »   Window Parts, Patio Door Parts, & SuppliesIt isn't that difficult to keep your Pella doors sliding smoothly. The rollers for a Pella sliding door fit inside rectangular metal cartridges, and these cartridges in turn fit into mortises in the bottom of the door. When properly installed and working, the grooved roller fits onto the roller track and glides effortlessly, but through age and normal use, the roller can get bent, chipped or otherwise damaged and need replacing. To do this, you need to pull the metal cartridge out of the door, which requires a special corkscrew-style tool. If you have the tool, the job is easy, but without it, some frustration may be involved.

Prepare the sliding half of the door for removal. The procedure is different , depending on the series. For doors in the Architect or Designer series, you have to remove the panel retainer screw at the bottom of the door that holds the door to the track. For doors in the ProLIne series, remove the handle and bumper in the top track, using a screwdriver. Lower the rollers by turning the screws in the bottom corners of the door counterclockwise to provide clearances, then lift the door and angle the bottom away from the frame to remove it. Set the door on a pair of sawhorses. Turn the roller adjustment screws clockwise as far as they will go to exposes the plastic rollers. Unclip each roller from the holder. Remove the metal cartridges by inserting the bolt of a corkscrew-style cartridge puller through the holes that were holding the roller. Align the puller with the base of the door and tighten the screw to extract the cartridge. Extract the cartridges using a vise if you don't have a puller.

Set the door on a workbench so that the bottom is facing the vise and anchor it by screwing a wood brace against the bottom. Feed a length of 14-gauge wire through the holes that held the roller, wrap the wire around the vise and pull it tight. Open or close the vise -- depending on the vise's orientation, to extract the cartridge. Install a new cartridge and roller by inserting the cartridge in the mortise and tapping it in with a hammer. Raise the rollers by turning the adjustment screws clockwise before you reinstall the door.
