We love our jobs and we love working at The Loft! We think The Loft is the best hair salon in Winnipeg to work at! We love our guests and enjoy seeing our regulars, who come in for all their hair and esthetics needs. Our spa is hopping these days, with everything from lash extensions to waxing, nail art to facials and the classic manicures and pedicures. And how can you beat having your hair or nails done while enjoying a glass of wine?? Yes, that's right, the Loft has a licensed bar!Life at The Loft really is so much fun and we hope you'll join us for an appointment soon! I’ve been a longtime client and friend of this fantastic business at 111 Fort Street ever since I moved to Winnipeg from the US seven years ago. As you've noticed, fashion colours or "vivids" are a hot trend this year! Although those glorious locks of vibrancy look fun and exciting, with great colour comes great responsibility! For the first time this year I decided to take the plunge and go PINK (see me up there ^ in the middle)!

It started very subtle and eventually grew into an all over glowing magenta, and most recently a soft violet. And I love my colour, but I want to give you the full picture of the commitment that comes with vivid locks. Extreme lighteningIn order to achieve cooler colours or "pastels" your hair must be very light. That means if your hair is light brown or even a warmer blonde, it won't work. You need to see a professional for your service and get to what we stylists call "a level 9 or 10" which is just a fancy way of saying "the hair needs to be as light as the inside of a banana" (pale yellow). Once you've reached that level and you've committed to the service, you must be willing to come in every 6-7 weeks for a toner (refreshing the colour) and a retouch (for those pesky roots that come in).If you're looking for more of a deeper or warmer colour, you can apply on hair that is not as light, but keep in mind that the darker your hair, the less vibrant and the less it will show. For these services I ALWAYS use Olaplex because it is a bond multiplier and links the damaged bonds together making it much stronger and less susceptible to damage.

It is always followed by the Olaplex treatment which is the icing on the cake for healthier hair. Without proper precautions, you could end up with dry, straw-like hair, meaning it has become "over-processed" which can eventually lead to what we call "a chemical haircut". There is a way to treat over-processed hair, but you must be willing to treat it like gold and come in for regular treatments and haircuts until it is healthy again. But once your hair is beyond repair, it must be cut. These are just some things to keep in mind when lightening your hair, whether it's for vivids, balayage, highlights, anything that requires you to bleach your hair. It is important to know these things so you are aware of how delicate hair is and what to expect when getting any of these services in excess or without proper precaution. Because I only wash my hair once a week, my colour lasts twice as long which saves me time and money in the long-run! "Miracle in a bottle" Keeping up with the colourAnd of course, there's the after care.

Never wash your colour treated hair with hot water! It will strip the colour out much quicker than lukewarm will. It is important to also have salon professional products that are "colour safe" because that is essential to maintaining your beautiful mane! Stylists may also recommend a restorative product to strengthen and reverse any signs of damage in the hair. I use Living Proof's Restore Shampoo and Conditioner. After only a few months, I have noticed a significant difference in the quality and health of my hair! I can wash my hair less often (once a week) because of their patented molecule "OFPMA" that repels dirt and oil making the hair feel cleaner longer. Not only that, but it's colour safe and makes the hair 20x stronger in just 14 days! Because I only wash my hair once a week, my colour lasts twice as long which saves me time and money in the long-run! It's truly a miracle in a bottle and is the best insurance for your hair! By using salon professional products and treating your hair responsibly, you will guarantee that your colour will last much longer, and your hair will be much stronger and healthier, which means beautiful looking hair that's the envy of them all!

Selene is a hair stylist at The Loft Salon in Winnipeg. A colour correction in the salon world is wanting an extreme change or having an unfortunate experience with a hair colour. There are two common colour corrections, going from dark hair to much lighter hair or light hair to very dark hair. Colour corrections can also be used to get rid of unwanted yellow or brassy tones. Everyone`s hair is different, therefore every single colour correction process is different. What Happens in a Color Correction?Colour corrections can sometimes be done all in one day but often need multiple colour services done over a period of weeks or months. To achieve your desired colour in one day it depends on current colour, desired color, your hair's porosity and how much time was booked for the service, which can sometimes take up to a whole day of work. Sometimes it is best to do a colour correction in a few sittings to prevent damage to the hair. You may not leave the salon with the desired colour in one sitting but it will give your hair time to recover from one lightening process rather than trying to fit several processes in one sitting which can be very damaging to your hair.

When going from dark to light we use lightener (what is known as "bleach"). This de-colourizes the hair while another colour or toner will need to be used after to put colour back into the hair. Unfortunately, while using lightener not only does the colour come out, so does the protein, which can leave the hair fragile and dry. To help protect the porosity of your hair, we would suggest a Protein Kerastase Treatment to help put some of the protein removed by the lightener back into the hair. When going from light to dark instead of just putting a color we will need to fill the hair first with an in between colour. This prevents the colour from becoming muddy or green. How much does it cost? There is no set price for a colour correction. Stylists charge anywhere from 100-200 per hour, depending on their experience. The cost of the service reflects the amount of colour used and time spent on a client's hair. Hair can be too damaged to colour correct due to conditions of the hair and may need a cut, extreme conditioning and rehydration rehabilitation prior to any colour correcting service.

The number of visits to salon can not always be determined until the first process is started. It is important to take your stylist's recommendations on protecting your hair. We want to not only achieve your desired colour but also to make sure your hair is healthy! It's time to get all criss cross-y! Braiding season has arrived! Whether you're getting all dressed up to go to grad or a wedding, or getting ready to play and let loose at the beach or a summer festival, braids are the perfect summer style. Braids are huge right now and almost everyone can wear them, from short bobs to long tresses, braids are for almost everyone. We love a huge, loose backwards braid, completed with flowers or a fun head band for an outdoor festival, where you want that careless look but also want your locks to stay put. For grads and weddings, a braid can be the perfect style, from formal, neat and sleek to loose, toussled and pretty. If you are heading out for a few days to a summer festival, be sure to ask your stylist how to make your style last.
