Wow, what a weekend! After six weeks of renovation, we finally finished up the kitchen over at our Alma Project at I snapped a lot of pictures, can’t wait to show you the transformation, it’s such a great before and after story! Thanks for all the sweet comments on our blue balcony from last week. As promised, here is the four step easy peasy lemon squeezy way to sew your own removable pocket pillow covers. First things first, grab yourself some outdoor fabric from a local fabric store or online (here’s a great list of online fabric sources!) I used two yards of P. Kauffman Conservatory Aquamarine for two rectangular lumbar pillows and two yards of Waverly Meridian Medallion for the square versions. (Depending on the size of your pillow, you often can get away with only 2/3 of a yard per pillow, but I ordered 1 yard for each pillow to be safe.) For each pillow cut the front piece to fit the size of your pillow giving yourself extra fabric for the “pouf” of your pillow insert – also allow an extra inch for sewing the seam for Piece A (the front) and an extra inch on the sides of Pieces B and C.
Step 1: Roll under the sides of the edges of Piece B and C and hem the one side. Step 2: Lay pieces B and C pattern side up on your work surface and layer the pattern (or repeat) so they are lined up. Allow about 3 inches of overlap for your pocket opening so the pillow form doesn’t bulge out from the pillow cover. Step 3: Lay the front piece on top, pin the pieces together inside out, then follow the pins all around the four sides with your sewing machine, it takes just a minute or two. Step 4: Trim any excess fabric, turn inside out, then stuff your pillow insert inside the cover, pretty simple! I follow these same four steps when I make a removable pillow cover for both outdoor or indoor pillows, it’s my favorite way to make pillow covers with new fabric that are easy to wash and change out with the seasons. Sewing some box cushions to make your chairs more comfortable takes a little more time and effort than purchasing cushions from a store, but the advantage is that you get a custom fit, and may choose fabric of any color, pattern and texture you like. A box-style cushion cover is one with a boxing strip -- a strip of fabric between the front and back pieces that adds depth to the cushions. The technique only calls for three pattern pieces and sewing straight lines, so the project is an achievable one -- even for novice sewers. Measure the width and depth of the chair seat and determine whether your box cushion needs to be square or rectangular. Draw a square or rectangle onto a piece of paper that matches the dimensions of the chair seat, using a pencil and ruler. Measure and draw a second set of lines one-half inch outside of the sides of the original square or rectangle for a seam allowance.
Cut out the shape along the outer set of lines. This is the pattern piece for the cushion front and cushion back. Decide how deep you want your cushion to be and add 1 inch. This gives you the depth for the boxing strip. Calculate the perimeter of the front and back pattern piece by adding the length and width together and multiplying the result by two. Add 1 inch to this to get the length for the boxing strip. Draw a long rectangle on paper matching these dimensions, and cut out the shape. This is the pattern piece for the boxing strip. Place the front/back pattern piece onto the fabric and trace around it with a fabric marker or chalk, then repeat. Place the pattern piece for the boxing strip on the fabric and trace around it. Cut out the three fabric shapes. Fold the boxing strip in half lengthwise with the right sides of the fabric together. Sew along the short end, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. You should now have a loop. Press open the seam. Fold the loop into quarters, then press the folds with an iron.
Your loop should now have four fold lines, dividing it into four equal parts. Pin the boxing strip to the front fabric piece around the four sides, with the right sides of fabric facing. If your cushion is square, position the fold lines at the four corners of the front piece. If your cushion is rectangular, position the fold lines at the center of each side of the front piece. Clip a scant 1/4 inch into the boxing strip at all four corners. This allows the strip to ease around the corners of the cushion front. Sew the boxing strip to the front piece along all four sides, leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Pin and sew the second side of the boxing strip to the back fabric piece in the same way you sewed the front piece to the first side of the strip; this time, stop sewing when you reach about three to five inches from the end of the seam. Turn the cushion cover right sides out through the three- to five-inch gap you left in the final seam. Insert a cushion form or a piece of upholstery foam cut to size into the cushion cover through the gap.
Hand-sew the gap in the seam closed using a needle and thread. Keep the stitches as small and neat as you can.
