Prev Sunscreen Guide for Kids (updated for 2016) Next The Yay to the Nay: Letter Learning Apps for Toddlers How to grow a business, by helping kids grow When OXO decided to expand into the children’s category, they came to Smart for a uniquely OXO approach. As their long-term design partner, we knew exactly how to extend the OXO brand promise to reach this new segment. Entering a new category with a strong vision and innovative product design The kids’ category is crowded with bright and colorful cartoon characters and animals, so we knew the Tot offering would need to distinguish its offering. By leveraging OXO’s 20-year legacy of bringing Universal Design to the mass market, we created a line of innovative cleaning and feeding tools that parents would trust and feel comfortable purchasing. Since its launch in Fall 2010, the Tot line has taken OXO into new retail channels, won numerous design awards and continues to be a high-growth segment for the company.

A desire to “teach and grow” Tot is a comprehensive line of baby products that grows with children as they learn how to eat and drink by themselves. It’s also designed as a modular and thoughtful set of tools for parents — keeping things organized, tidy and clean so more time is spent bonding with children, instead of cleaning up after them. Subtle, sanitary, thoughtful, contemporary and modular – Tot’s simple and unfussy designs help the line blend into everyday life. Special design elements help wet items dry faster and remain sanitary. We helped them develop clever features like weighted rubber grips to help kids as they grow and learn. Clean lines create a modern look families are happy to live with for years. A flexible system of containers and lids work together to reduce clutter and stress. Baby gets a seat at the table The award-winning Tot Sprout chair is one of the few high chairs on the market that grows with a child during his or her development stages.

The seat height, footrest and tray are all adjustable, which gives stability and comfort to baby from six months to five years of age. Not only does it comply with strict safety regulations, the Sprout chair is also designed to meet the tough standards of moms and dad. For instance, the detachable tray can be removed swiftly with just one hand, leaving the other free to hold the baby. Tot is a brand new category for OXO, which meant new identity and packaging design that would retain the original OXO brand essence while standing out in the hyper-color world of kids. When meeting with parents, especially moms, we learned a lot about the psychology of the “cute factor” and how we could interpret it for OXO. This research inspired us to incorporate illustrations in a modern, fresh way to reference the nurturing relationship between parent and child. The result is a commercially successful brand extension that introduces the OXO brand to the youngest and fussiest generation. iF Product Design AwardOXO Tot Sprout High Chair

We’d previously worked with them on some healthy Easter treat ideas and I love their tableware so when the email came to see if we’d like to try the Oxo Tot sprout high chair I quickly accepted. As I said, we’ve had the highchair for a few weeks but with Luisa’s birthday life was a bit chaotic so we had to hold off building it at first. The first chance we had I tasked Matt with the important job of putting the Sprout together. We made a little video of the build process which was really straight forward – even with Luisa under foot. The Oxo Tot Sprout high chair is designed to be used from 6 months to 5 years. The different components can be removed and adjusted as your child grows. This means it can transition from a traditional highchair to a seat at table height for a young child.

The idea of having a product that lasts really appeals to me as it’s more economical and environmentally conscious. The first time Luisa tried out the Sprout I knew we were all going to love it. The padding is really thick and supportive, the straps are easily adjusted and the seat is roomy. Our previous highchair was already getting to be a bit of a squeeze and Luisa isn’t at all big for her age. I really like the fact that the tray is large, this makes it perfect for a baby-led approach to weaning. Because there’s ample room for baby to manipulate their food they can grasp it without accidentally pushing it off the edge. This is great for us because, as I’ve said before, Lu is really independent when it comes to meal time. Apart from how safe and comfortable it looks what I appreciate about the Oxo Tot Sprout high chair the most is how practical it is. The tray adjusts and can be removed with just one hand. The cushion insert is easy to remove and wipe clean. Even the straps can be taken off – I’ve actually put them in the washing machine after a particularly messy porridge episode this morning.

Despite not folding down the Sprout doesn’t take up too much room. In contrast to a lot of other highchairs it actually looks really cool so it’s not some garish hunk of plastic sitting in your kitchen. Obviously we’ve only used it in the traditional way so far but it’s really easy to remove the crotch post, adjust the seat depth and the footrest height. There’s no need for any special tools when moving the Sprout from one stage to another. As you can see from the stock images below it comes in 3 different colour combinations. The Sprout retails at £205, there’s no getting around it, it’s pricy. That being said it’s a really high quality piece of furniture that will last until your child is 5. I’m pretty confident that given the build quality it would stand up to many more years of use from subsequent children. As you can probably tell we’re big fans of the Sprout so far. Yes it’s pricy but I really would recommend it, it’s certainly something I would consider putting on your baby wishlist!
