City teams were out in full force this festive season to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors.Keeping you safe this festive season

Beach safety

On New Year’s Day, residents and visitors enjoyed a day out at the beach and our lifeguards were on duty to assist swimmers in distress and also responded to other incidents.

Almost 25 000 children were tagged in the Identikidz project between Monday,
30 December 2019 and New Year’s Day. However, since the projected launched in mid-December last year, 121 335 children were tagged at 16 beaches. Approximately 318 children were lost on those beaches were also reunited with their parents or guardians.

Factors that contributed to children going missing on beaches include:

  • Children visiting beaches without parents or an adult
  • Intoxicated parents not realising their child is missing
  • Parents leaving the beach without their children
  • Parents not supervising their children while on the beach

The Identikidz project will run until 12 January 2020, so if you’re heading to the beach this weekend, be sure to register your children with the Identikidz team as soon as you arrive.

Our Liquor Enforcement unit has also been busy on our beaches and, as of 3 January 2020, has confiscated more than 11 900 bottles of alcohol. More than half of the total confiscations were made at beaches on the False Bay coast, as well as Camps Bay and Clifton beaches on the Atlantic Seaboard.

Traffic services

The festive season is a time for us to help make and keep our roads safe. Traffic officers arrested more than 5 000 people in December for, among others, driving under the influence and negligent driving.

Officers issued more than 13 000 warrants, impounded 343 vehicles and 880 cell phones and issued more than 350 000 fines for various offences.
