That is because LEGO elements hardly ever wear out, and the appeal of the toy is more timeless.I certainly know that I retained mine.That said there are several possible disposal mechanisms:Retention indefinitelyPassing on to a relative (younger sibling, niece/nephew, son/daughter, etc) or to a relative of a friendSelling in a garage sale or similar where disposal is the primary motiveSelling on eBay or similar venue where value extraction is the primary motiveGiving away to charity (play center, school, or similar)DiscardingLoss due to unknown circumstancesSince sets are composed of multiple pieces it is possible for one set to suffer multiple
fates, for example:The box is deliberately discarded soon after purchaseThe instructions or a few pieces are inadvertantly lost or discarded some time laterSome time later, a minifig or some elements are given away to a relativeSome time later, the set, now much reduced in value, is sold at a garage sale for a very small fraction of its original valueMuch fun was had.Contrast that with the same set bought at the same time:The box is flattened but retainedThe instructions are placed in a binder with holes punched in themThe parts are placed in a bag after being enjoyed, somewhat dusty but none lostSome time later, the set is sold on eBay for 2x-3x its original valueSome fun was had.or with yet a third copy bought by someone elseThe entire set, for 5-15x its original valueNo fun was had by the original owner but much fun had by the avid collector who bought it.
