An adjustable, ergonomic task chair available in three sizes with a seat and back composed of semi transparent flexible mesh called Pellicle®. Available in either Basic or Highly Adjustable models, the Basic chair shares the Pneumatic lift, Kinemat Tilt mechanism and Tilt Tension adjustment with the Highly Adjustable chair, which offers all the options. Instead of traditional fabric and foam, Classic Aeron's mesh seating surface conforms to the sitter's shape, evenly distributes weight to eliminate pressure points and lets air pass through for cool comfort.
The patented Kinemat Tilt mimics the body’s natural pivot points—the hips, knees, and ankles—so the chair works with, not against, your body, as you recline fluidly. Allows the user to control the resistance felt when leaning back in the chair. The seat height adjustment uses compressed air to raise the seat height from a low of 16 in. to a high of 20.5 in. An ergonomic device that can be adjusted vertically through a 4.5-inch height range. Its depth is also adjustable. A highly-adjustable ergonomic device that offers gentle support to the pelvis and can be adjustable in and out for stronger, firmer lumbar support. Armrests pivot inward 17.5 degrees for keying and outward 15 degrees for mousing. Arm height adjusts independently within a four-inch vertical range. The user can control and limit the tilt range. Positions the seat angle 5 degrees forward, a posture favored by many computer users. The lumbar pad is an optional lower lumbar back support device available on the Aeron chair. Ideal for long duration sitters who need some additional support. The PostureFit is an optional ergonomic device you can add to your Classic Aeron chair. It provides the maximum support available to your lower back. If you’ve had lower back pain issues in the past with your chairs, we recommend you add this additional support. PostureFit is made up of 3 elements: The butterfly pad is the central element of the device. It’s what supports the pelvis, allowing it to sustain a forward rotation, keeping it from rolling backward into the void between your lower back and the chair. It works in conjunction with the Pellicle® suspension of the Aeron chair, molding to the user's contours to provide custom-fitted support. Unlike traditional lumbar where more support means more pressure, PostureFit offers gentle support, marrying to the contours of the body.
In fact, you may not realize it is there until you take it away! The wishbone frame and the adjustment knob work together to control the degree of support the user requires. The wishbone frame also holds the butterfly pad in place and its shape complements the lines of the Aeron chair, enhancing its design. It is available in three sizes: A, B, and C. Designed for standard commercial and office carpet these 2.5-inch casters are the most commonly selected caster option. Designed for non-carpeted floors. They have a thin rubberized coating to prevent floor marring. In addition, hard-floor casters have less roll to prevent the chair from rolling across the room when you push away from your desk. Designed to move easily through thicker carpet than what is found in a typical office. These 3-inch casters are slightly larger than the standard 2.5-inch casters. In the 1970s, Herman Miller was deep into research in the field of office ergonomics and work seating and challenged Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to rethink traditional designs of office chairs.
Their research produced the award-winning Ergon chair in 1976, and Equa chair in 1984. Building upon what they had learned, Stumpf and Chadwick began working in the early 1990s on a design for the world’s most comfortable office chair. Keeping in mind Charles Eames’ point that chairs should be designed for how people sit rather than how they should sit, they set about designing a chair that would: (1) Promote the health of the person sitting in it (2) Move and adjust as simply as possible (3) Support a person in any position (4) Really fit large or small people (5) Be environmentally responsible. The result, Herman Miller Aeron Chair, was introduced in 1994 to immediate success and became an icon of contemporary design. It introduced the use of a semi-transparent mesh material called Pellicle, which allowed air to circulate against the sitter’s back, as well as conform to the shape and build of the user so that pressure on the impact areas is minimized. The visual transparency of the chair exemplified the idea of transparent architecture and technology, a design strategy dedicated to producing objects that would be less opaque and intrusive in the environment.
Far ahead of its time in that it was composed of mostly recycled materials, the chair was engineered to be easily disassembled and recycled. Notable among the numerous design honors given to Chadwick and Stumpf during their careers was the inclusion of their revolutionary Aeron chair in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection.
