The futuristic shoes can only be purchased in select US stores and for a retail price of $720.The company’s PR director Heidi Burgett tweeted that the trainers will be available at “select Nike retail locations” and appointments to “experience and purchase” will begin on 28 November, for select Nike+ members. On 1 December, Nike+ members will be able to try out the shoes at two Nike stores in SoHo, at Nike SoHo and 45 Grand. The shoes feature “electro-adaptive reactive laces (Earl)”. Each shoe has an internal cable system made from fishing line and a pressure sensor in the sole.

When a wearer puts the shoes on, this activates the sensors in the sole and the laces will tighten, depending on the foot shape and weight distribution of the wearer. The laces are controlled by a system of pulleys and can be tightened or loosened with a pair of buttons near the tongue. The Earl system is powered by an in-shoe battery that has a lifespan of around two weeks between charges. This battery also powers an LED inside the sole, which lights up when the shoes are tightening and also to indicate low battery. Designer Tiffany Beers said the system has been in development for 10 years.Nike's 'Back to the Future' self-lacing trainers help raise $6.7 million for Parkinson's research At the launch event for the product in New York earlier this year, Nike CEO and president Mark Parker claimed the HyperAdapt sneakers mark a “new era of sports – the era of personalised performance.”This is the first time the technology will be available for general purchase, but Nike has made self-lacing trainers before.
