Deriving its name from the Finnish word for “new perspective,” muutos, their company is reinvigorating the Scandinavian design movement with a simple, yet powerful concept: Bring together the best, brightest, and most promising Nordic design talent.

Cultivate and encourage creative thinking from said talent, then refine the concepts for an international audience. Muuto’s expansive approach means varying perspectives are given a platform, yet unified behind a collective respect for Scandinavian design values. Their shapes, for example, are a nod to the spare, utilitarian forms inherent to the school, yet with a slightly modern twist — a wash of pink, a dash of crimson, a healthy dose of canary yellow. Quality of make and material is still a top priority, yet Muuto designers work in a variety of mediums — from wood to glass — to avoid any stagnancy and encourage progressive thinking. On September 30th, we’ll toast the arrival of Muuto to ABC Carpet & Home with a launch event featuring Bonnén and designer Thomas Bentzen (his designs include the Cover Chair and Around Coffee Table). In advance of the event, we spoke with Bonnén from his Copenhagen office. Our interview is below. Why did you begin Muuto? My partner Kristian and I began Muuto eight years ago;

we actually both come from a business background but have always been really interested in design. Obviously Scandinavian design is very well-known, particularly within the last century, but we thought there was a need for someone to lead the next wave in the movement. We thought, why not bring together the leading Scandinavian designers from all four countries: Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland? Our mission is to showcase the best in Scandinavian design. What differentiates Muuto from other design houses - Scandinavian or otherwise? Muuto means “new perspective” in Finnish — we’re trying to bring something new to the great heritage of Scandinavian design. We want our product to have personality, and allow our designers to express their perspective. We work in a variety of materials and actually produce in a variety of factories, which I think is an advantage for our company. But we’re still very passionate about the history and legacy of Scandinavian design.

This means we’re looking to create long-lasting designs from durable materials that transcend trends. Quality is very important. As is functionality, honesty, and modesty. We’re a bit organic, inspired by nature — you won’t really see any “bling bling” designs from Muuto [laughs]. What are you doing to cultivate young and up-and-coming designers? We’re always trying to take our business to the next level, and one of the ways we do that is inviting students from all the design schools in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland to participate in a talent competition. We receive a lot of great ideas and give out awards to the winners. muuto oak cover chair; muuto red unfold pendant light; muuto small around coffee table; muuto oak reflect chest; muuto pink visu chair; muuto 70/70 dining table; You seem very participatory in the international design community and conversation. How is that important to you? Pretty much right after we launched our first collection in Copenhagen, we didn’t just want to expand in the Nordic community.
