The Lego Movie Sequel is an upcoming 3D computer-animated space adventure musical comedy film[2] that will be a sequel to the 2014 film The Lego Movie. It will be the fourth film in the franchise, set to follow the releases of both of the first film's spin-off films, The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie, set to be released in 2017. It is being directed by Mike Mitchell,[1] with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, writers and directors of the first film, returning as producers and co-writers. After it became clear that the first film would become a blockbuster success, a sequel was already in the works even before its release. However, Warner Bros. did not invite Village Roadshow Pictures, the first film's Australian production partner, to participate in the making of the sequel. Currently, there has been no indication as to whether any cast members from the original film, such as Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman, will reprise their roles in the sequel.

The film is set to be released on February 8, 2019 in 2D, 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D by Warner Bros. Pictures. Even before the critical acclaim and blockbuster success of The Lego Movie, plans for a sequel had already been set in motion. On February 3, 2014, Jared Stern was hired to write the sequel, along with Michelle Morgan.[3] On March 12, 2014, Deadline reported that animation co-director Chris McKay will direct the sequel with Lord and Miller as producers.[4] Warner Bros. did not invite co-producer Village Roadshow Pictures to return as a participant in the sequel.[5] On April 10, 2014, it was reported that McKay wanted to have more women in the sequel than men.[6] On July 28, 2014, it was reported that Chris Pratt wants to return to reprise his role as Emmet. It was also reported that Will Arnett might return to reprise his role as Batman, but has not decided yet.[7] However, he has reprised his role as Batman in The Lego Batman Movie. In October 2014, Warner Bros. scheduled The Lego Batman Movie for 2017, and The Lego Movie 2 for 2018.

[9] On October 25, 2014, it was reported that Lord and Miller had signed on to write The Lego Movie 2.[10] On October 30, it was announced that Australia-based animation studio Animal Logic was in talks to produce the next three Lego films (though the deal was not finalized at the time) and the New South Wales government would make financial contributions to all the films.[11] On November 12, during an interview with BBC News, Lord and Miller revealed that there would be more female characters featuring in the film. On February 24, 2015, the sequel was officially titled The Lego Movie Sequel and Rob Schrab was officially announced as the film's director, replacing McKay as director as he was scheduled to direct The Lego Batman Movie instead.[13] By February 2017, Schrab had been replaced by Mike Mitchell, reportedly due to "creative differences". The film is scheduled to be released on February 8, 2019.[14] It was originally scheduled to be released in May 2017,[15] but the release date was later assigned to The Lego Batman Movie, which was itself rescheduled for release on February 10, 2017.

At that time, the film was planned to release on May 18, 2018. ^ a b c d e fLEGO Movie 2 Is Going Really Obvious With Its Official Title The LEGO Movie 2 has revealed its title, and it’s so delightfully on the nose you’ll instantly fall in love with the franchise all over again. Warner Bros. confirmed that The LEGO Movie 2 will now and forever be known as The LEGO Movie Sequel. You’ll either think that title is a complete stroke of genius or the laziest attempt to devise a moniker in the history of movies. The Hollywood Reporter were the first to unveil the title, and it’s also been revealed that The LEGO Movie Sequel has a new release date too, as it’s been brought forward a week to May 18, 2018. The LEGO Movie Sequel has taken over the spot from Madagascar 4, which was previously in line to hit cinemas on that date, but was pulled because of DreamWorks Animation’s reshuffle. It also comes two weeks after the release of Avengers: Infinity War, which means that viewers should be pining for something else by the time that The LEGO Movie Sequel hits.

If it’s anything like the original, audiences will clamber to reunited with Chris Pratt’s Emmet Brickowski and Elizabeth Banks’ Wyldstyle. Released in February 2014, The Lego Movie was a surprise critical and financial hit for Warner Bros. Not only did its relatively modest $60 million budget return a whopping $468.8 million, but it was also met with a rabid response from critics and audiences alike. The writing and directing team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller instilled a joyful tone to The Lego Movie that simply permeated the entire movie, while it was also featured luscious animation, stellar vocal talent, genuinely hilarious gags, and a heartfelt story. Plus, it had a rollicking soundtrack that was sensationally catchy. Warner Bros. was quick to take advantage of The Lego Movie’s success, and they instantly sent the follow-up into development. While it’s a shame that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (who are arguably the hottest property in movie comedy at the moment) are only returning as producers, Rob Schrab, who replaces the duo in this role, has previously worked wonders in television as a writer on the likes of The Sarah Silverman Program, Community, The Mindy Project, and Parks and Recreation

, and is a shrewd choice. The supreme vocal talent from the original, which was led by Chris Pratt, but also included Elizabeth Banks, Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, and Charlie Day, should all return to the fold, while it was previously teased that the follow-up will introduce Emmet’s sister. The Lego Movie Sequel will be preceded by The Lego Batman Movie and Ninjango in February 2017 and September 2017, respectively, as Warner Bros. looks to build another cinematic universe for us all to devour. Blended From Around The WebWhat The LEGO Movie 2 Will Be About The surprising success of The LEGO Movie last February meant that a sequel to the much-loved animated hit was always going to be green-lit. The LEGO Movie 2 is due to be released in three years time, and now Phil Lord and Chris Miller have teased further details regarding what the film will actually entail. The duo, who co-wrote and directed the 2014 original, teased to Empire Magazine that The LEGO Movie 2 will see a continuation of the live-action element present in the first movie, and revolve around how growing up into the pre-teen years changes a kid's perspective on toys.

"Well, I don’t want to give you spoilers, but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view?" Meanwhile, this four-year gap would also give the follow-up the opportunity to place the likes of Emmett Brickowski, Wyldstyle, Batman, Metal Beard, and Benny in different circumstances than where we last saw them in the first movie. And while Miller didn't mention them specifically, hopefully some more of these characters will pop up during the adventure too... But if Abraham Lincoln, the Statue of Liberty, Superman and Wonder Woman can’t star, then I’d just be happy if The LEGO Movie 2 can extend the original’s superb Star Wars homage - since the scene below was arguably the funniest movie moment of the year: At this point I would trust anything that came out of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s minds. The writer/director team have been heavily involved in three of the most successful movie franchises of the last five years, in the shape of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie.
