Play.OverviewCommunitiesThings to DoArts & CultureHealth & WellnessContact Us << Back to News The players in Polk County’s economic development efforts are unified in purpose, plan, and program, and that pleases Adrian Jones, the general manager of LEGOLAND® Florida in Winter Haven. “Five years ago when I came here, that wasn’t the case,” says Jones, who moved from Southern California to Central Florida in March 2010 to open and run the popular family theme park. “I think it took the last recession for people to recognize that something had to change,” Jones says. “We asked the question: ‘Why is it like this?’ When we went somewhere and people told us the histories, we had to say ‘It’s irrelevant. Fast forward to early 2015. There’s a much more coordinated and positive approach to business recruitment and expansion within the county, and it’s getting noticed in key circles. “It’s different now,” Jones says. “It’s a more united front with business leaders, chambers of commerce, political leaders, and the city and county commissioners.”

He says that when he, Central Florida Development Council President and CEO David Petr and others were in Tallahassee for meetings with state leaders recently, “Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and the other officials really appreciated that we were putting on a unifying front.” The Central Florida Development Council (CFDC), the primary economic development organization for Polk County, is supported in its efforts by more than 50 financial investors. LEGOLAND Florida is a fairly recent investor, at $10,000 per year, giving Jones an inside track on what’s happening economically within the region and how the CFDC serves as a “one-stop shop” for prospective business investors. “It’s a very exciting time in Polk,” he says, noting in particular a resurgence in tourism, led by LEGOLAND; the county’s location along the Interstate 4 high-tech corridor, represented by the new Florida Polytechnic University; and Polk’s positioning as a major logistics and transportation hub, thanks to the 2014 opening of the CSX Central Florida Intermodal Logistics Center in Winter Haven.

“Logistics here is about to explode,” he says. Turning to the industry he knows best, Jones foresees a steady growth in the level of tourism, the number of tourists, and the amount of tourism dollars in Polk. “LEGOLAND is a hot topic driving the economy,” he says. “LEGOLAND Florida and Florida tourism in general is a growth market, a resilient market. I think Orlando proved that during the recession.” In 2011, during the heart of the recession, Florida had a then-record 87.3 million visitors and maintained its lead as the top travel destination in the world, according to state reports. At the time, tourism had an overall $67 billion impact on the Florida economy. Jones says LEGOLAND, which opened in October 2011 on the site of the former Cypress Gardens, will employ up to 1,500 full-timers and part-timers by the time the park’s new LEGOLAND Hotel opens on May 15.  Construction also is under way on Heartlake City, the park’s newest land, which is scheduled for a summer 2015 opening.

Based on the popular LEGO Friends line of toys for girls, Heartlake City will feature a horse-themed disc coaster, an interactive show, and shops inside the Heartlake Mall. Merlin Entertainments, LEGOLAND Florida’s London-based parent company, not only is expanding the Winter Haven park, it’s expanding massively in Florida and all across North America, Jones shares. Jones has been a key figure in the development of the Merlin’s new I-Drive 360 entertainment complex on Orlando’s International Drive, just north of SeaWorld Florida. Set to open in the spring of 2015, the $90 million I-Drive 360 will feature a 400-foot-high “observation wheel” called the Orlando Eye, a Madame Tussauds wax museum and Sea Life aquarium. Jones says the business strategy for Merlin, the world’s second-largest visitor attractions operator, isn’t to compete directly with Walt Disney World. Instead, it’s to attract (with a secondary and more affordable level of entertainment) a good percentage of the millions of tourists who flock to Disney annually.

In addition, buses will shuttle visitors to and from the Merlin attractions in Winter Haven and Orlando, boosting the entertainment value for guests of LEGOLAND and I-Drive 360, and likely increasing the length of their stay in the region. “Orlando is THE brand for tourism; you can’t argue with that,” Jones says. “We need to feed off of that and align ourselves with the internationally recognized brand for tourism.” Jones is a leading supporter of plans to build the Central Polk Parkway, a proposed six-lane toll route that would loop from the Polk Parkway in central Polk County, south to the Bartow area, east to the Waverly area and north to Interstate 4, near the Polk-Osceola County line. A major section of the proposed parkway would parallel U.S. Highway 27 to the east of 27. The Central Polk Parkway would serve the Merlin attractions well, providing a faster route for buses running between LEGOLAND in Winter Haven and I-Drive 360 in Orlando, but Jones sees a need for the parkway beyond just the interests of his parent company.
