Q: I intend to pray, fast, recite the Qur'an and strive hard to implement the obligations of the Qur'an and Sunnah, but sometimes I feel I am doing this to gain people's admiration, so I quit doing some good deeds out of fear. How can I get rid of this feeling?

A: You have to carry out the rituals of Islam in obedience to Allah's orders and seeking reward from Him. Do not pay attention to the obsessions which tell you that your deeds are considered Riya' (Showing-off), and try to overcome this feeling as much as you can.

Fatawa al-Lajnah daimah no 8691-12

Q: I am a nineteen-year-old man. Praise be to Allah, I offer Salah (Prayer) congregationally at the Masjid (mosque), even Fajr (Dawn) Prayer. Sometimes, I pronounce the Adhan (call to Prayer), and I have memorized six parts of the Qur'an. However, there is something which bothers me; when I sit alone in my room, or when I sleep, I imagine that I have traveled to London and committed Zina (sexual intercourse outside marriage) there with immoral girls. Am I considered to be a sinner? This does not affect me to the extent of masturbation, except rarely. However, I am afraid that the Hadith which implies that if a person's Salah does not prohibit them from committing evil, Allah will not accept them, applies to me.

A: First: A Muslim is not accountable for obsessions and self-talk, as it is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah forgave my people the evil promptings which arise within their hearts, as long as they do not speak about them or act upon them." (Al-Bukhari [Fath-ul-Bari] no. 5269; Muslim no. 127, numbered edition.)

Second: Masturbation is Haram (prohibited).

Third: The Hadith you have mentioned is Da'if (weak), but its meaning is attributed to some of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet) and Tabi'un (Followers) may Allah be pleased with them. As long as you do not commit sins, please do not bother yourself with such obsessions.

Fatawa al-Lajnah daimah no 7349-1

Q: Is there any authentic Du`am(supplication) reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding people who suffer from devilish whisperings, obsessions, and impatience?

A: Such people should mention Allah frequently and seek refuge with Him from Satan. Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others narrated on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: {{ "Satan comes to one of you and says, 'Who created so-and-so? 'till he says, 'Who has created your Lord?' So, when he inspires such a question, one should seek refuge with Allah and give up such thoughts." [1]}} In another version narrated by Muslim: {{ "So, when he inspires such a question, say: 'I truly believe in Allah'" [2] }}. {{ Muslim also narrated on the authority of `Uthman ibn Abu Al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) who went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Satan confounds my prayer. He (peace be upon him) said: "That is a devil called Khanzab. When you feel his illusory acts, spit thrice at your left and seek refuge with Allah from the devil thrice. `Uthman said: When I did that, Allah dispelled from me what I felt." [3]}}

Q: How can I get rid of the whispering of Satan during Salah (Prayer)?

A: Do not follow the whispering of Satan in Salah, but ignore it and busy yourself with contemplating the Qur'an you are reciting and the greatness of Allah while pronouncing Takbir (saying: "Allahu Akbar [Allah is the Greatest]"), Tasbih (saying: "Subhan Allah [Glory be to Allah]") and Tahmid (saying: "Al-hamdu lillah [All praise is due to Allah]") while standing, bowing, prostrating, sitting to pronounce Tashahhud (testification recited in the sitting position in the second/last unit of Prayer) and all the sayings and deeds of Salah. You should seek refuge with Allah from Satan three times while spitting to your left side.

It says in Fatawa al-Lajnah no. 7654, title: "Insinuations of apostasy": "A Muslim will not be punished for such Satanic psychological notions and insinuations that do not nullify one's religion, especially if he has sound beliefs, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) states: 'Allah has forgiven for my Ummah (Community) the evil thoughts that occur to their minds.'" Q 13: When I do a good deed, I find a devilish insinuation for fame and being praised by people. However, I remember Allah quickly and seek refuge with Him from Riya' (showing-off) until this insinuation goes away. Does Allah hold me accountable for such involuntary insinuations? Is this due to lack of Iman (faith)? What shall I do?

A: If the case is as you have mentioned; that you have insinuations, dismiss them as soon as possible, and seek refuge with Allah from them and from the evil of Satan, we hope that Allah forgives you, has mercy upon you, grants us all sincerity in words, and protect us from the deception and whispers of Satan.

Q: I suffer from doubt and insinuations in my Salah (Prayers) and Sawm (Fasting). I always have this feeling, and sometimes I doubt Allah's existence and that Salah is worthless, etc. Are such insinuations a physical or psychological disease or a bad habit? Am I committing a sin? What will my condition be on the Day of Resurrection when I am brought to account before Allah? Is there a remedy in Islam for these doubts and insinuations?

A: Such doubts and insinuations are from Satan. You should ignore and pay no attention to them. Seek refuge in Allah from Satan and frequently say, "I believe in Allah and His messengers." This is the advice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for whoever experiences such insinuations.

Fatawa al-Lajnah no.9306-2

Q: I have some Christian friends and I have invited them to profess Islam. They agreed to profess Islam provided that I answer their questions. They admit that Allah (Exalted be He) is the Creator of heavens, earth, and whatever is between them and the Creator of everything. Their questions are: { What is Allah composed of? How is He composed? Who created Him? } When they asked me these questions, I was embarrassed as I could not answer their questions. I left them and did not meet them again. I hope you will give me a Fatwa on this issue. What is the reply I may adopt to answer their questions without feeling embarrassment? May Allah reward you with the best!

A: These questions are whispers which the devil sends to his followers of humans and others to lead them astray from the Straight Path. Allah (Praised and Exalted be He) is the First with no being before Him, the Last with no being after Him, the One with no peer, no father and no son, and there is not any equivalent to Him. It is authentically reported in Sahih Muslim and other books of Hadith, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: {{ “People will keep on asking you about knowledge, until they say this, ‘Allah created us, who, then, created Allah?’ Abu Hurayrah, who was taking hold of the hand of a man, said, ‘Allah and His Messenger told the truth, two persons asked me this question and this is the third one.’” [1]}} In another narration, he said, Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: They (the people) will constantly ask you, Abu Hurayrah, (about different things pertaining to religion) until they would say: Well, there is Allah, but after all who created Allah? Abu Hurayrah said: Once I was in the Masjid (mosque) when some Bedouins came there and said: O Abu Hurayrah: Well, there is Allah, but who created Allah? He said: I took hold of the pebbles in my fist and flung at them and remarked: Go away! Go away! My friend (the Prophet) told the truth." [see footnote #1]}}

In addition, it is narrated in the two Sahih (authentic) Books (Al-Bukhari and Muslim) that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: {{ The Devil comes to one of you and says, 'Who created so-and-so?' till he says, 'Who created your Lord?' So, when he inspires such a question, one should seek refuge with Allah and give up such thoughts. [2]}} In another narration the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: {{ “People will keep on asking until it is said: ‘Allah created the creation, who, then, created Allah?’ Whoever encounters anything like that, let him say, ‘I believe in Allah.’” [3]}} Also Abu Dawud narrated the late narration and also narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: {{ When they face that, let them say: "Allah is One; Allah is the Self-Sufficient Master; He has not begotten and He has not been begotten; and no one is equal to Him." Then, one should spit three times on his left side and seek refuge in Allah from the devil. [4]}}

You should keep company of righteous people who may provide you with beneficial knowledge that will be helpful to you in performing acts of obedience. You should avoid evil company who may affect your morals, deject your enthusiasm, weaken your resolution in performing the rites of your religion or fulfilling your family role and who may tarnish your reputation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised his Ummah to keep company of righteous people and warned them against evil company. He set the following noble parable in this regard saying: "The similitude of good company and that of bad company is that of the owner of musk and of the one blowing bellows, as for the owner of musk, you would buy from, or he would offer you free of charge, or you would smell its pleasant odor, and so far as one who blows the bellows is concerned, he would either burn your clothes or you shall have to smell its repugnant smell." Narrated by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him).

Adherence to the principles of the Qur'an and Sunnah protects Muslims from all forms of deviation. The corruption of nations results from their negligence of the Law of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) and the teachings of the Prophets (peace be upon them). The Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: I am leaving among you two things, which if you adhere to them you will not go astray. The Book of Allah and my Sunnah.

Shaykh Ibn Baz (may Allah be merciful to him) said: "We are at the end of the time (worldly life). We are now in the fifteenth century of Hijrah, in which ignorance has spread and knowledge has diminished, as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Time will pass rapidly, ignorance will prevail, and religious knowledge will decrease.” [1] There are only very few insightful scholars in Muslim countries, while there are many bad scholars and charlatans who make the false claim of having knowledge while they are not scholars. They falsely ascribe themselves to knowledge but they are insignificant and valueless due to their lack of knowledge of the truth and their failure to support it. After all, the argument of dissenters, innovators in religion, and astray people is weak; if not frail."

HOLDING FAST TO THE ROPE OF ALLAH :

There is no way for their victory over their enemies and retrieval of their past glories and ravished honor except through this way and path, namely holding fast all of them together to the Rope of Allah, helping one another in righteousness and piety, standing together against falsehood and its followers, seeking the Help of Allah, adhering to His Religion, making ready all they can of power for Jihad in the Way of Allah, retrieval of past glories and stolen rights that had been seized by the enemies due to our disunity, negligence, and disobedience. Allah is the One sought for help.

RESISTING PEOPLE OF BID’AHS AND FALSE BELIEFS:

The only means of safety against that danger is that qualified scholars, who are noted for their knowledge of Allah’s Religion and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him), should direct the Muslims towards adherence to the truth of their religion, and the abandonment of every Bid’ah, and superstitions of the different and various Sufi ways that contradict Allah’s Law and all newly-invented practices in religion that are propagated by many people. The Muslim scholars should also urge Muslims and assure them that there is no way for salvation and reunion except through holding fast to Allah’s Glorious Book and to the Sunnah of His trustworthy Prophet (peace be upon him), and also through abandonment of whatever opposes them of prejudices, desires and innovations.

Majmu' Fatawa wa Maqalat of Shaykh Ibn Baz 3/126

BID’AHS AND ABERRATIONS ARE FALLACIES:

They fall under associating partners with Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) in worship, although worship is an Exclusive Right of Allah Alone. Allah (Exalted be He) says: “And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allâh, and worship none but Him Alone (abstaining from ascribing partners to Him)” [al-Bayyinah: 5]

He (Glorified be He) also says: “So worship Allâh (Alone) by doing religious deeds sincerely for Allâh’s sake only. Surely the religion (i.e. the worship and the obedience) is for Allâh only.” [al-Zumar: 2-3]

Moreover, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in the Hadith reported in the Two Sahih (authentic) Books of Hadith (i.e. Al-Bukhary and Muslim) on the authority of Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Right of Allah over His slaves is that they should worship Him and not associate anything with Him.” [1]

It is an obligation for Muslim scholars to spread the Allah’s Religion and explain to the followers of Bid’ahs, Sufism, superstitions, and deviations the invalidity of the Bid’ahs that they adopt, illustrating the Honorable Sunnah and the clear-cut, tolerant way, supported with evidence from the Qur’an and the Sunnah, and to warn them against their mistakes in a kind manner using the clear proof, conclusive evidence, irrefutable argument and unequivocal style without violence or harshness. Rather, they should address them in lucid expressions and argue in a good way so that they could consider the matter carefully and discard superstitions, polytheistic actions, and Bid’ahs which they follow without guidance or insight. Indeed, truth is the long-sought objective of the believer, which, whenever he finds it, he should accept it. Allah (Exalted be He) says: “And say: “Truth (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism or this Qur’ân or Jihâd against polytheists) has come and Bâtil (falsehood, i.e. Satan or polytheism) has vanished. Surely Bâtil is ever bound to vanish.” [al-Isra’: 81]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Anyone who does an action which is not in accordance with this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected.” [2]

HOLDING FAST TO ALLAH’S SHARI’AH:

Thus, the only means to achieve true Islamic unity and real union is through the unanimous agreement of the leaders to resort to Allah’s Religion, adhere to Allah’s Shari’ah, help one another in righteousness and piety, and take Allah’s Shari’ah as a judge, renouncing positive laws, manmade beliefs, and discarding imported theories that contradict Allah’s Shari’ah. There should be no judge except Allah’s Shari’ah which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), his Companions, and those who righteously followed him took as judge. This is the only means to unify their word, bring them together, unite their lines, achieve victory over their enemy, retrieve their past glories, and honor that have been usurped by the enemy due to the existence of the causes of disunion, disruption, disagreement, combating and warring which have harmed and not benefited us.

Majmu' Fatawa wa Maqalat of Shaykh Ibn Baz 3/126

RETURN TO THE TRUTH AND THE RIGHT PATH:

In consequence, the preachers of Bid’ahs and superstitions, such as the Sufis and others, would realize the falsity of their claims and thus, return to the right path and follow the truth, since many of them have been confused as regards the truth. If they perceive the truth, they would surely follow it and keep to its path. Indeed, if the people endowed with knowledge, insight, and belief spread the truth, enlightened people on Allah’s Command and called to His Shari’ah and explained the evidence of this, then Allah would guide whoever He wills to guide. By following this way, the scholars of Islam would have be doing good to people and conveying to them what they are required to convey, and would thus fulfill their duty. Afterwards, whoever deliberately goes astray, his affair is left to Allah. Allah has promised to fill Hellfire and Paradise, as He (Glorified and Exalted be He) says: “Not upon you (Muhammad (peace be upon him)) is their guidance, but Allâh guides whom He wills” [al-Baqarah: 272] Indeed, religious scholars are required to convey, explain, and corroborate the truth with evidence, enlighten the people on it, and patiently persevere in this. After all, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) guides whoever He wills to the truth.

BID’AHS MUST BE RENOUNCED AND FOUGHT AGAINST:

Every Bid’ah, aberration, and approach that opposes Allah’s Law must be discarded. All people should pursue the way that was trodden by the Prophet (peace be upon him) throughout his life and then assumed by his Companions and the rightly-guided Caliphs and later followed by the virtuous Imams and righteous Salaf (predecessors), who treaded in their steps on the right way and straight path. This is the way that must be adopted, followed, and preached and whatever disagrees with it including Bid’ahs brought about by the people must be abandoned and repudiated through explanation and clarification, so that none (of those rejecting the faith) would be punished except after clear evidence.

REFINEMENT OF ISLAMIC CREED:

The mass media must propagate the pure Islamic creed that is clear of all stains of Bid’ahs, Shirk, and claims of sorcery, so that people would not go astray or be deceived by what the Sufis, preachers of Bid’ahs and superstitions say. Such is the duty of all mass media in order to serve the pure and clear creed and to propagate Islamic Da’wah. Allah is the One sought for help.

RETURN TO THE TRUTH AND THE RIGHT PATH:

So that the preachers of Bid’ahs and superstitions, such as the Sufis and others, would realize the falsity of their claims and thus, return to the right path and follow the truth, since many of them have been confused as regards the truth.

"On the Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) when some faces will become white and some faces will become black; as for those whose faces will become black (to them will be said): "Did you reject Faith after accepting it? Then taste the torment (in Hell) for rejecting Faith."" [Aal Imran: 106]

Al-Dajjal claims and makes things through which he confuses people. He is called Al-Dajjal due to his telling many lies and the extraordinary things he does, such as ordering the heaven to rain and the earth to grow plants and his killing of some people who will be brought to life again. It will not take a long time till his affair be disclosed. At first he will claim that he is a prophet and then he will claim that he is the lord of mankind, which is the gravest lie and fraud. Allah (Exalted be He) will then order 'Isa ibn Maryam (Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him) to descend and kill him at the gate of Ludd in Palestine along with the Jews as indicated by several Hadiths reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him).

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: Boasting of forefathers, reviling other peoples’ genealogies, seeking rain by stars, and lamentation.”
