NEARLY 100,000 dining chairs are set to be recalled by a major furniture retailer after two people had part of their toes cut off by sharp metal edges on the legs.
News Corp Australia can reveal Fantastic Furniture will on Monday recall its popular Worx chair following the latest incident, in which a Queensland boy lost a third of a toe.It’s understood other big retailers sell almost identical chairs — all reproductions of a classic 1934-designed cafe chair called the Xavier Pauchard Tolix — meaning there could be several hundred thousand in homes.Only Fantastic’s $39 version is known to have chopped off toes due to what the $230 million company calls a “potential issue” with its design.The most recent Worx victim is 11-year-old Trae McGovern of Ormeau Hills on the Gold Coast, who stubbed his left foot on a Worx chair during a weekend barbecue at a family friend’s home in October.Trae had reconstructive surgery at Gold Coast University Hospital but the part of his second toe that was cut off could not be reattached.Trae’s mother Jackie Gross has been pushing for a recall.“This could have been avoided if something had been done after the original accident,” she said.
In April, Mark Bulman of Fairfield West in Sydney, was coming to the aid of his crying toddler Nate when he bumped into a Worx and tripped. The middle toe of his left foot got trapped in the inner side one of the legs and, as he fell, the sharp metal edge sliced it off.“They should have recalled the chair straight away,” Mr Bulman said yesterday. “But nothing was done and now someone else has been hurt.”Mr Bulman is seeking compensation; whether Trae can will only be clear once he is older and the effect on his life is known.Kimberly Allen, general manager at Shine Lawyers which is representing Mr Bulman, said it was pleasing that Fantastic was recalling the Worx.“But we are deeply disappointed that there had to be another incident, where a child was the victim, before action was taken,” Ms Allen said.The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission asked Fantastic to recall the chairs.Fantastic CEO Debra Singh said: “There potentially is an issue with the chair. It’s a potential issue.“
