Ikea Creates 3-D Knitted Chairs Inspired By Sneaker Technology As part of Ikea’s 9th PS collection, the furniture company is planning to offer a chair inspired by the 3-D knitting used in athletic footwear. Not unlike a sneaker, the chair is composed of mesh that is stretched across a steel frame. Designed by in-house Ikea designer Sarah Fager, the chair was made using a digital knitting similar to tone made to produce Nike‘s Flyknit, which was first sold in 2012.

“At Ikea we have been curious about this 3D knitting technique for some time. We have all seen it being used in those colorful sneakers and it’s a really smart way to produce things, since it’s fully automatized and this knitting machine can be placed at any supplier to combine it with other materials in a product,” said Fager on the chair. Priced at $160.00 and offered in pink and blue, this item will hit stores in February 2017. Ikea offers its PS collections every three years and for 2017, the line will include over 50 products including limited edition items designed by 17 designers from around the world More info on Ikea PS 2017 offerings here. Ted McGee (left), a 22-month-old from Minnesota, was crushed when a six-drawer Malm unit, similar to the one (right), fell on top of him in FebruaryTed's mother Janet McGee, from Minnesota, said she had put her son down for a nap and was checking on him every 20 minutes when she discovered him underneath the piece of furniture, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The U.S. Product Safety Commission are now reviewing the case, labelling it a 'tragic tip-over fatality'.The warnings affect 27 million pieces, which cost between $46 and $179 in the US and £49 and £99 in the UK. They come after two-year-old Curren Collas died when a six-drawer Malm chest fell on him and pinned him to a bed in February 2014.Three months later, a 23-month-old child from Snohomish, Washington, was killed when a three-drawer chest also crushed him. The latest tragedy occurred despite the company launching a free wall-anchoring programme for customers in the US and UK in a bid to avoid further home accidents.

The IKEA manual warns customers that if a dresser is not mounted to a wall that it can fall on an adult or even worse, a child, which could result in a fatal injury Customers around the world have been reminded they have access to wall-anchoring kits for IKEA's Malm range. Curren Collas, pictured with his mother, Jackie, was one of the other children killed by the range A spokesman for IKEA said in the McGee case the product was not attached to the wall, claiming assembly instructions would have advised the family to make sure it was. They said: 'We at IKEA offer our deepest condolences to the McGee family.'At IKEA, we believe children are the most important people in the world and the safety of our products is our highest priority. 'Upon being informed of this incident IKEA US immediately reported it to the authorities and an investigation is taking place. The company, which has stores across the world, had already been forced to issue advice about its Malm range last year after two children were killed in separate incidents'IKEA US has been advised that the product was not attached to the wall, which is an integral part of the product's assembly instructions.'
