An eggcrate foam mattress topper provides an extra layer of cushioning. An eggcrate foam mattress topper can help ensure a good night’s sleep. Also called convoluted foam, these mattress toppers are covered in egg-shaped bumps that provide a soft sleeping surface that promotes air circulation. The foam’s peak-and-valley design can improve blood flow by decreasing pressure on the skin, especially at pressure points such as hips and shoulders. According to The Better Sleep Council, an eggcrate foam mattress topper can even extend the life of your mattress by protecting it from dirt and dust. Installing an eggcrate foam mattress topper takes only a few minutes. Remove the sheets from the bed. If you also have a mattress pad, you can remove it or leave it in place. You can use a mattress pad under an eggcrate foam mattress topper if you want, but you cannot use a mattress pad on top of the eggcrate foam. Lay the eggcrate foam on top of the bed, lining up the edges of the foam with the edges of the mattress.

Some eggcrate foam toppers have “zones” – areas with more points to support your back or hips. Position the eggcrate foam so that the zones are in the correct position. Generally, zoned eggcrate foam has the least amount of points at the foot end. You can place it with the points facing up or the points facing down, depending on your preference. If you are unsure of which way is more comfortable for you, test it out both ways. Spread the bottom sheet over the eggcrate foam. Pull the corners of the sheet into place at the corners of the mattress. Most sheets accommodate thin eggshell-foam mattress toppers but you may need deep-pocket sheets to fit over thicker foam pads. Avoid using sheets that fit so tight that they compress the eggcrate foam; compressed foam does not provide the same air circulation and cushioning benefits. Memory foam mattress topper? March 31, 2012   Subscribe Is a memory foam mattress topper a good idea? In looking for ways to improve my quality of life in small and cost-effective ways, I've been thinking about my sleep habitat and the fact that I have pretty relentless lower back and hip pain that's worse in the morning. In reading responses to other questions here, it seems like a fair number have found some relief by sleeping on either a memory foam mattress or topper. Since my current mattress is just a few years old and very firm, I'm looking at toppers -- but I have zero experience with memory foam. Is this a good idea at all? A similar question was asked previously six years ago. Hopefully, there's more experience and new information since then. I am tall, large and generally a side sleeper, but tend to shift around a lot. Could I ask your recommendations for a decent thickness and firmness? Is 4" thick with 5 pound density appropriate? Can I do better?

Where's the best buy as far as quality for the buck? Are there any specific eBay sellers that are highly regarded for memory foam? Our local Costco only has a 2.5" topper, so I am probably looking at buying online. I have allergies to dust etc. Best way to handle this with a topper that is basically open-cell foam? A certain type of cover? Any additional instructions regarding large dogs sleeping on memory foam (aside from the fact that they will likely love it beyond measure) -- special care tips?Memory Foam Mattress with an Electric Blanket (or Electric Mattress Pad) There is no safety problem such as flammability with a decent memory foam mattress or topper (as contrasted with one of the cheap egg-crate type foams). Memory Foam Durability with Added Heat There seem to be two schools of thought on using heated mattress pads with memory foam. Some people say the memory foam mattress won’t support the bodyproperly if it is extra warm. Tempur-Pedic® states on their web site that they do not recommend using electric blankets or mattress pads because the “exposureto direct heat over extended periods of time can cause damage to the TEMPUR material”.

Tempur-Pedic® further suggests that if at bedtime your mattress is too cold, try turning up the bedroom thermostat for twenty to thirty minutes before going to bed. Once you are in bed, the mattress will warm up quickly in response to your body heat. If you do choose to use an electric blanket to warm your mattress before bedtime, we recommend that you turn it off after 30 minutes to avoid overexposing the TEMPUR material to high heat. My personal opinion - not supported by rigorous objective testing Several years ago, I myself spoke to the Technical Director at another one of the memory foam mattress manufacturers and he told me there would be no problems. I tend to believe this version because I personally have slept on a memory foam mattress with heated mattress pads for about six years now and I do not notice any problems. In fact, during cold weather, my personal opinion is that the support and comfort actually work better due to the extra warmth and I didn't like the "cold brick" feel.

And I definitely do not want to increase my house temperature. One of the major benefits of heated bedding is to save money and energy by heating only the bed, not the whole house. Since some memory foam manufacturers say no and some say yes, you will have to make the final decision whether to go with the heated pad on the memory foam. Sorry we couldn’t be more scientific or definitive.
