Upon opening it, I was impressed with the softness of the top material and the plushness of the pad. It's definitely a higher quality than what we have on our mattresses right now. To test breathability, I held the pad with the top surface tightly against my face. I could still breathe (although it took a bit of effort). Doing the same thing with the underside of the pad against my face, I could not breathe at all. So the loftiness of the fiberfill definitely adds some level of breathability, despite the waterproof layer inside.I put the pad on my bed over the memory foam topper, and there seemed to be enough room lengthwise, but there was not nearly enough coverage across the width of my bed (see the video) despite the fact that my is bed well within the 15-inch limit the manufacturer says the pad will fit.
Other than that, I liked how the pad went on. The stretchy sides were easier to get over the corners than my current mattress pad.Where I started to have problems was with the noisiness of the pad. The packaging says that the waterproof layer is "noiseless," but as you can hear in my video, it is anything but. This might not bother some people, but I knew it would drive me crazy. I put a sheet on the bed and rolled around for a few minutes, then decided to remove the pad. On a less squishy mattress, the crinkling might be less of an issue, but over the memory foam topper (over a firm latex mattress), it's ridiculously noisy.However, if you MUST have waterproof protection for your mattress (and there are many good reasons for this), or if you are just less sensitive to the crinkling noise, this is a high-quality mattress pad.Moving onto the memory foam topper, it's surprisingly heavy (over ten pounds). It arrived (together with the mattress pad) in a box within a box, and it was quite unwieldy.
The topper is wrapped in a huge piece of mesh polypropylene (probably) fabric and then folded and rolled up tightly inside a sleeve that you have to cut off (which is a little tricky to do without risking cutting the topper). The instructions say to discard the fabric, so don't worry about cutting that.After being unrolled, the topper will slowly puff up over the next couple of days, but it looked uncrinkled and ready to go within minutes (and they say it is fine to sleep on right away). I did notice quite a strong, distinctive memory-foam odor. From experience, I expect that this will go away eventually, becoming much fainter in the next day or two, and then gradually losing all smell over a period of weeks. It's an unpleasant smell, and I think it's made my nose kind of stuffy, so, if possible, plan to open and put this thing somewhere away from people for at least a few days when you first get it.The topper is quite cushy, as you'd expect. It might actually be TOO cushy for my taste.
I sink in so much, I kind of have a hard time rolling over and getting out of bed. But it does seem comfortable. This would be FANTASTIC on a hard, institutional type of bed (dorm room, hospital, hospice, convalescent home, etc.). But my latex mattress, though very firm, was already comfortable (no pressure points). Still, I guess I kind of pined for the sort of squishy beds I was used to, so I thought I'd like this topper. I'll try it for a week or so, but I'm thinking I'll probably remove it next time I wash sheets and put it on my daughter's bed.But I don't blame the topper for not suiting my squishiness-level preference. It's a quality product. There is a one-year warranty, but there are a lot of qualifiers listed, and to make a claim on the warranty, YOU are responsible for shipping the topper to them at your own expense (and, given the weight of this thing, it wouldn't be worth it, especially since they might receive it and decide it doesn't qualify as "defective").Between the topper and the pad, this would almost be a five-star product except for these points:*The pad is noisy.*The pad does NOT fit a 15-inch mattress.*The topper smells bad.*I resent all the disclaimers in the warranty.
