Touch of ECOTouch of ECO Tell your friend(s) about this story: Wiarton Willie Festival gears up for Groundhog Day It takes a brave woman to admit that Wiarton Willie, the furry little rodent that put Wiarton on the map is, in fact, ugly.

But then Mary Lynn Standen softens her view and adds, "he's so homely he's cute." Well the cuteness of an albino groundhog with pink piggy lips and a severe case of buck teeth is a matter of personal taste. What is inarguable is that every year Willie attracts several thousand visitors to the annual Wiarton Willie Festival held in his honour. This year, the festival runs from Thursday, Jan. 29 to Monday, Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. The five-day event features live music, skating, winter games, sledding, cooking workshops, a craft show, horse-drawn sleigh rides, bonfires and loads of demonstrations for everything from ice fishing to archery. Then there is something called Zorb, which squeezes a human into giant transparent ball and rolls and spins the victim along a snow track. Lumberjacks will be on hand demonstrating their skills, as will snowshoers, and there will be lessons on how to build a bed out of evergreen boughs, just in case you are fed up with the comfort of a memory foam mattress.

Mix all this with pancake breakfasts, chili tastings and a Groundhog Ball on Saturday night, dancing to a blues band. This is what Canadians do when they are bored in the depths of winter. But what about the sleeping Willie, who really doesn't care if it's 20 below zero and his fans are eagerly awaiting an answer to that question: early spring or a six more weeks of, brrrrr, winter? It's up to Willie to give us the good or the bad news but, in the meantime, the whole town explodes into a celebration of all things winter. Really, any excuse for a party in this community at the foot of the Bruce Peninsula. "It's an outdoor winter festival with so many periphery events, " said Standen, municipal clerk for Northern Bruce Peninsula and part-time Willie co-ordinator. "There's hockey teams meeting at the community centre, churches doing events, the legion doing events and the uptown business association. It has grown in the last eight to 10 years." This is the 59th year for the festival, so exactly how many Willies have come and gone in six decades?

Well, it's hard to say. An average groundhog can live six to eight years, but our Willie has enjoyed a much more posh lifestyle than the little hogs burrowing dens in Ontario fields. When one Willie dies, they get a replacement and the critter's only job in life is to make that fateful prediction every Feb. 2. On the other 364 days of the year, the Willie du jour lives comfortably in a mini glass house down by the bay. This year, Willie will make his appearance Monday morning along with his "shadow cabinet" of advisers dressed in spiffy purple suits. The day starts with fireworks at 7 a.m., Willie's prognostication and then a big snowball fight between two teams: Early Spring vs. More Winter. Join the team of your choice and fire up your throwin' arm. Standen suggests participants wear the clothing most suited to their choice of teams: warm clothes for winter, fewer for spring, even though the weather is predicted to be on the cool side. As for the weather, it can't be as bad as last year when the town was hit by a 20-centimetre dump of snow, which cut off Highway 6 north of the town all the way to Tobermory.

The "silly old Willie" festival is all about winter, said Standen, and this weekend is looking pretty good so far. "The weather could be tropical if it gets up to -4 during the day, " she said optimistically. 2015 Wiarton Willie Festival Festival runs Jan. 29 to Feb. 2. Wiarton is located on Highway 6 at the base of the Bruce Peninsula, two hours north of Waterloo Region Read the original post HERE.Dreams Bed Bath Home Decor updated their cover photo.Dreams Bed Bath Home DecorDreams would like to thank all it's customers and community for your support over the years and invite you to take part in the closing sale going on this week.
