Pocketed springs that contour to the shape of your body. Sprung and MemoryFoam Mattresses Both springs and memory foam for the best of both worlds. I find most beds too hard on holiday and thought I'd take a foam camping mat/ mattress topper or inflatable mattress. But which type is best - it needs to be comfy on the bed, lightweight, easy to pack and reasonably priced. Any good suggestions please? I don't know if you ever resolved this issue or not, but I'd say go for a self inflating mattress as these are the most compact and lightweight option. There are loads of different styles available and Vango have some great ones :) their ultralite 3/4 mat weighs less than 500g and would easily fit in your suitcase without taking up too much room. Hope you managed to get a comfortable night's sleep during your trip! Yes the problem of uncomfortable hotel beds was resolved for me with the one I bought from Comfort Solutions, it's a travel mattress topper.

My brother now uses one too and says he should have got one years ago. So many holidays have been spoiled in the past with mattresses that are too firm or can feel the springs! Not sure if I am allowed to lost this on here but his is the one we have mattress-solutions.co.uk/buy/memory-foam-tra… The woman on the phone was really helpful too! I also have problems sleeping on hard beds , especially in Greece, and, in the past, I've used extra pillows to lie on. But now, if we are travelling to Greece, I look out for places that have cocomat beds - these are really comfortable. And we do take an extra paid holdall onto flights, containing an aero blow-up bed, pump, pool inflatables and all our toiletries! We've used the aero bed once - not for a hard bed, but for a too narrow bed. There is one thing that disturbs my sleep even more than a hard bed and that's my husband snoring in my ear! I take it none of you have heard of bed bugs and the rise in their prevalance over the last 10 years.

You can find plenty of info online. The most likely place for you to come into contact with them is hotels. It has nothing to do with cleanliness, it is a question of numbers. The busier a hotel is, the more likely bed bugs will become a problem. Five star or hostel makes no difference. The higher the 'turnover' of rooms the higher the risk. It's a numbers game. For many years now, many hostels will not allow guests to use their own sleeping bags. This is because that is the most likely way for them to be spread. Carried from one hostel to another in a sleeping bag. The same obviously applies to any other item carried by a traveller from one location to another. So carrying your own pillow for example or as in this thread, a mattress topper is a potential issue. Bed bugs are the 'elephant in the room' that the hotel industry does not want to talk to you about. Chances are that if you travel and stay in enough hotel rooms you will encounter them. It's just a question of numbers and the numbers are increasing.

Take a look at the map on this site and do a little searching for hotels near you to get an idea of just how common they are. / For other countries simply Google 'bed bug registry' and add the country name. A few bites when travelling may not be a big deal (they don't carry disease). However, IF you carry them HOME, then it will become a big deal for you. Moving something from one bed to another will clearly increase your chances of doing that. Here is the Canadian Government's advice on what to do as a traveller. Note the advice NOT to bring a pillow from home. The same would apply to a mattress topper obviously. Thanks for the info. It's made me think again all I can say is YUK bedbugs are something I don't want to bring home from holiday. I appreciate you time taken in replying Until you have walked 10 miles in the poster's shoes or better still, mine please refrain from passing judgement on others needs. I can assure you some of us need cushioning to avoid pain and misery.

I won't address to anyone in particular, but NEVER take any bedding from home to any motel, hotel, resort or accommodation elsewhere UNLESS you plan on leaving the bedding in a garage or shed separate from your home IMMEDIATELY after arrival home - in garbage bags, double-bagged. Plus, if you intend on laundering this bedding, take it to a (coin) laundromat where it can laundered in HOT water on a very HEAVY/INTENSE cycle. Also, immediately following the laundering, vacuum seal - vacuum roll bags will suffice - the bedding for storage until needed for next use. Store away from your home, i.e. as mentioned before. Edited: 21 January 2014, 04:07 Although, granted, taking bedding on holiday with you will increase the risk of bringing bed bugs home, the little blighters will easily hitch a ride in luggage. Hitch a ride in luggage or clothing! Comfortable mattresses are so important wherever we may stay, sometimes the higher the cost of the hotel, the worse the mattress is.
