Some new memory foam, also known as visco-elastic polyurethane foam, emits odors that may be bothersome at night when your face is so near the mattress, pillow or mattress topper made from the foam. Some memory foam products, such as mattresses and mattress toppers, are treated with flame-retardants to comply with federal standards regarding mattress flammability. These chemicals, also known as volatile organic compounds, "off gas" or escape from the foam, causing odor that dissipates over time. Employ a few tactics to help the odor disappear more quickly. Air It Out Remove new memory foam from the outer plastic packaging surrounding it. If possible, place the foam outdoors for at least a few hours on a dry, non-humid day. A porch will suffice if you'd rather not leave it out in the open. If you're unable to take the foam mattress, pillow or topper outdoors, prop it up in a room against a chair or wall so it ventilates from all sides. Open the windows and turn on a window fan drawing air out of the room.
The longer the foam product airs out, the less noticeable the odor will be. Baking Soda Solution Baking soda -- the same type used to deodorize a refrigerator -- also helps de-fume memory foam. After airing out the memory foam, sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress, topper or pillow and allow it to sit for an hour or so. Vacuum away the baking soda with an upholstery brush attachment. Apply the baking soda directly on the foam object, rather than on a sheet or pillowcase, for best results. Room Refresher A brand new memory foam mattress may make the entire room smell for a few days. Place a bowl of white vinegar in the room to help remove the odor from the air; as the mattress off-gases, airborne odors will be absorbed. If you don't care for the smell of vinegar, place the vinegar in the room and leave it out all day while you're away, then dump the vinegar down the drain before bedtime. Vinegar also helps deodorize drains. Keep It Fresh Mattresses, pillows and bedding absorb sweat simply from sleeping on them;
memory foam is no different. Keep the mattress smelling its best by letting it air out for a few hours when it is time to wash the bedding. Remove all bed linens and let the mattress breathe; if the room has a ceiling fan, run it on "high" speed to help dry any moisture in the foam. The Nature’s Sleep gel infused memory foam pillow uses a custom molded memory foam. The foam is a custom creation developed by Nature’s Sleep called ViTex foam. It provides the same great pressure relief and support that you’d get with traditional memory foam, but has the added benefit of improved responsiveness (similar to what you’d see with a latex foam). All of the materials within this pillow, including the foam, are certified with CertiPUR-US. Traditional memory foam has the tendency to absorb heat during the night, resulting in a continual build up of heat where your head and neck are resting. The gel beads are infused into the memory foam when it’s poured, resulting in consistent gel infusion through the entire thickness of the pillow. The gel infused memory foam reacts with the movement of the sleeper to provide consistent cooling. The process works like this: As you initially lay your head on the pillow the gel infused memory foam will contour and mold to the shape of your neck and head At this point the gel beads infused in the foam begin to immediately absorb excess heat As you move during your sleep the pillow will draw in and expel air, this process forces the heat out of the gel beads, resulting in a continual cycling of cool air being drawn in The cover is a bit unique because it’s actually two covers. The interior cover is 100% cotton and serves as a basic wrap around the foam core, providing extra protection and increasing longevity.
The exterior cover is a cotton-poly blend (75/25 split). The outside cover can be removed and is 100% machine washable. Additionally, it is allergen resistant. As I mentioned above, the most unique and enticing attributes of the Nature’s Sleep gel infused pillow are the cooling features. When it comes to cooling the Nature’s Sleep gel memory foam and gel infused memory foam pillows are amazing examples of what foam cooling should look like. Generally, when sleep companies describe a pillow or mattress as “sleeping cool” it really means it doesn’t “sleep hot”. However, Nature’s Sleep really takes it to the next level with this gel infused pillow. It actually sleeps cool, as opposed to just not getting hotter during the night. The gel lowers the surface of the pillow by up to 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The result is a surface that feels cooler than the temperature of my face, neck, and head. If you have a tendency to sleep hot and really need a pillow that maximizes cooling it’s hard to go wrong here.
Most foam pillows and mattresses I review have an odor. It’s just part of the manufacturing process and usually takes several days before that smell goes away. However, this was simply not the case with Nature’s Sleep gel infused memory foam pillow. There was effectively zero noticeably smell from the moment I opened the package. I was in such disbelief when I first opened them I pressed my face all the way into the pillow and inhaled…still nothing. This may seem like a small thing, however, I think it really speaks to the quality of the materials used in the pillow. Lower quality foams and manufacturing methods can result in extremely odorous pillows. The quality and hygienic materials used to build the Nature’s Sleep pillows have effectively eliminated the bad smell. If you’re a Sleepopolis regular then you probably already know I am a stomach sleeper. As a result, I really love a flat pillow. Needless to say, the Nature’s Sleep gel infused memory foam pillow is not flat.
It’s quite robust in terms of height and density. If you’re a back or side sleeper the height and density shouldn’t be a problem, if anything it’ll help to ensure your spine and neck stay in alignment during the night, providing great support. However, for most stomach sleepers I would not recommend this pillow. The height just doesn’t work as you won’t be able to keep your spine anywhere close to aligned. Is the Nature’s Sleep gel infused memory foam pillow right for me? Overall, the Nature’s Sleep gel infused memory foam pillow is a well designed and crafted pillow. The quality is abundantly clear and well communicated through the use of high-quality custom foam core, multiple covers, gel bead infusion, CertiPUR-US certification, and lack of any strong odor. I would recommend the Nature’s Sleep pillow to you if the following describes you: You are a back or side sleeper You like a pillow that’s a bit taller and denser You don’t require a ton of moldability with your pillow – since it is a solid piece of memory foam it will try to keep it’s shape and support you
