Your mattress needs to feel as inviting as it looks. Most adult Americans spend about one-third of their lives sleeping, and the mattress or pillow you use has a direct affect on the quality of that sleep. It's important that you know the contents of your mattress or pillow. Memory foam may be the best product for you, while poly foam is best for other sleepers. Deciding which is right for you starts with understanding the differences and similarities between the two products. The Basics Both memory foam and poly foam start with polyurethane, a product of the petroleum industry, so neither product is hypoallergenic nor can be considered organic. It is the manufacturing process and added chemicals that give memory foam its specific properties and which differentiate it from poly foam. Memory foam tends to feel warm faster than poly foam, an advantage for cold sleepers. Both products are infused with flame retardants, and both products may off-gas for a period after purchase, just as decorator pillows or shower curtains may have a particular odor for a while.

The length of time it takes for the odors to subside depends on the product. Understand Compression and Density The chemicals added to the foam during manufacturing make memory foam much denser than most poly foam, and density is one measure of foam comfort for a sleeper. The density increases the weight of the product, per cubic foot, and makes memory foam typically more expensive than poly foam. The amount of pressure required to compress foam is called the compression factor, and foam is rated by the weight per cubic foot -- the density -- and the amount of pressure it takes to compress the foam, or compression. A high-density, high-compression foam is a very hard foam, while a low-density, low-compression foam will feel very soft and give way easily under pressure. Memory foam is typically very high density and has low compression. Sofa-seat poly foam is typically high density and high compression, and the soft sofa-back poly cushions are usually medium density, low compression. The Ease of Memory Foam The density of memory foam and its low-compression factor give memory foam the ability to create a mirror image of your body and hold that impression, supporting all points of the impression.

Memory foam tends to be slower to rebound to pre-pressure shape than does poly foam because memory foam conforms so well to your body, and your body can indent the foam more than hard poly foam. The sleeper on a memory-foam mattress may have the impression of sleeping in the mattress, rather than on top of the mattress, the more common sensation with a poly-foam mattress. A Few Odds and Ends Poly foam is available in many different densities and compression factors, making the choice easier when you're shopping. For example, sofa-seat foam is rated at a density and compression factor different from sofa-back cushions. A sleeper may want a very dense, very high-compression factor foam or a dense foam with a low-compression factor. Poly foam is available in a myriad of different densities, compression factors, expected years of usage and even color. Memory foam is typically sold in bed-sized slabs as pre-made mattresses or shaped pillow forms only.
