Melanoma (lat. melanoma, melanoma malignum from gr. μέλας — «black») (or. melanoblastoma) - is a malignant tumor, that develops from melanocytes - pigment cells, which produce melanin.

Skin melanoma develops from epidermal melanocytes of normal skin or pigment nevi. One of the three skin cancer types. It predominantly located in skin, rarely - in retina, in mucous membranes.

Risk factor: melanoma is a multifactorial disease, connected with as external as internal, constitutive factors, which include genetic features. Similar to other types of nonviral cancer, melanoma occurs as a result of mutation in genes responsible for normal cell proliferation.

Identification of risk: DNA-diagnostics by FISH method.
