Perhaps you lean toward Vintage Casual or New Traditions? Either way, the nation's largest furniture retailer wants to start matching the lifestyles of local consumers to the couches, dining room sets, chairs, beds and accents they choose for their homes. A new Ashley HomeStore opens Saturday in Tampa, and executives are boasting of what will eventually be 11 different lifestyles on display in the store at 2915 N Dale Mabry Highway. "The thing about lifestyle retailing that's important to know is that it's really a path of discovery for the customer," said Dave Mattea, Ashley's vice president for global visual. "You come in shopping for a casual dining set for your kitchen, and you go to a department like most stores would have, and then you're going to leave. Many of the groups that we display have correlating pieces, so 'lifestyle' allows us to take that casual dining set and put it with a matching upholstery group and bedroom, and it really tells a story. "What you didn't know you were needing, you find you need in that discovery process."

Ashley's "Urbanology" section features the polished concrete flooring popular in the lofts and new downtown apartments that are drawing millennials. An industrial, gritty vibe presents itself, with thick, dark solid wood making up tabletops on display, and pieces with iron-tone finishes and details such as industrial rivets. A bed has distressed wood resembling reclaimed lumber. From there, visitors proceed to the much lighter and more stylish Contemporary Living lifestyle area. "What you thought you wanted when you walked in changes because you see the furniture displayed in an environment that's more like you would display it in your home," said Gene Lunger, Ashley's executive vice president for retail operations. "By seeing it the way it would look in your home, it makes it much easier to transition into additional purchases, and you can turn what might have been an item into a project or a room. "It just opens their eyes to a lot more possibilities." In the store's Dream Destination mattress gallery, a platform measures and plots pressure points of a customer as he or she lies down, with the data helping to recommend a proper mattress.

Customers have been getting the full lifestyle treatment this week during a soft opening, but a grand opening is slated for Saturday with prizes, food and fun for kids. It begins at 10 a.m. with the first 200 guests getting a free lunch voucher from one of the participants in a food truck rally in conjunction with the event. There will be more than $10,000 in prize giveaways, including 70-inch Smart TVs and room groups valued at $1,000 to $2,000. The store's Gen-Now area — that's the youth lifestyle Ashley promotes — will have face painting, balloon animals and interactive art projects. It's the eighth Ashley HomeStore in the Tampa area. There are now 627 stores, with 150 scheduled to open this year. The Arcadia, Wis., chain had $4.3 billion in sales last year. The store comes as employees have settled into the company's new e-commerce center in Centro Ybor, which opened in February with 200 jobs and the potential for 150 more. That facility formerly housed eight theater screens at the Muvico on Eighth Avenue.

The new HomeStore takes the space of a Kmart, which closed in early 2015 and had been vacant since. The shopping center at Dale Mabry and Columbus Avenue is now experiencing a flurry of projects, with a Tile Shop also coming to the complex, a Ker's Wing House under construction and a Floor & Decor home materials store sharing the former Kmart box next door to the HomeStore. "They'll be a fantastic neighbor for us," said Lunger. "They'll do well with our traffic. It's always nice to be able to get a complementary business like that. In this case, I'm sure the customer is going to benefit quite nicely." Ashley HomeStore shoppers will also notice a greeting station at the front door. It's there for more than just a cheery welcome: Consider the typical encounter between shopper and furniture sales associate. "Right up front you create a predator-prey kind of scenario — (customers) run off and you either head them off at the pass or you chase them," Lunger said. "Either way, it's uncomfortable, and it's usually met with an, 'I'm just looking.'"
