Insomniacs may finally be able to rest easy, according to some mattress salesmen who point to a new product that is specially designed to fit each individual sleeper. Kingsdown, a Mebane, N.C.-based company, has introduced its Sleep to Live line of custom-fitted mattresses to the Chattanooga area through a partnership with Mattress Firm, according to Ryan Vinson, president of Mattress Firm on Shallowford Road. "Mattress Firm partnered with Sleep to Live (an operating brand of Kingsdown) and successfully sold over $100,000 worth of mattresses at four home shows, so we decided to carry it in our stores," he said. Sleep to Live's biggest advance is the incorporation of a computer-aided diagnostic test. Customers lie on a mattress-like device that measures weight distribution, posture and other factors to help determine what type of custom mattress will work best for each particular spine. The device can also take a sleeping partner's measurements, allowing customers to have a bed with a different firmness level on each side.

A customer goes through an entire body diagnostic before a mattress is suggested. Mrs. Wilson has purchased three mattresses in the past year, she said, none of which she's happy with. "It would be great to quit spending all this money on mattresses," she added. After trying out several mattresses, Mrs. Wilson eventually chose Sleep to Live as her favorite. Nicole Van Ruden, a national account sales trainer for Sleep to Live, said the diagnostic test was developed after 12 years of sleep lab research. "The device measures four anatomical zones, takes 18 statistical measurements, and performs over 1,000 mathematical calculations," she said. Each bed comes with a non-prorated lifetime warranty, even though the industry standard is 10 years, said Ms. Van Ruden.
The rollout of the product is not limited to Chattanooga, but will be available in each of Mattress Firm's 500 retail stores, following six months of testing in select markets, said Jacqueline Morton, a spokeswoman for Kingsdown. "Consumers are really frustrated with having to walk in and choose from a sea of white mattresses," she said. "This is making it a lot easier; it's tested, and we're not just picking a number out of a hat." Prices of Sleep to Live mattresses begin at $1,999 for a queen, according to a representative of the Mattress Firm on Highway 153. A second Mattress Firms outlet is on Shallowford Road.
