A Sleep Number by Select Comfort store is expected to open late this summer at 4840 McKnight Road, according to company spokeswoman Sarah DuBois. The demolition of the existing building on the site began late last month. Sleep Number will join Mattress World Inc., Original Mattress Factory, Mattress Discounters and two Mattress Firm stores on McKnight Road in the township. Other stores along McKnight, such as Macy's, Sears, JCPenney, CORT Furniture and Designer Furniture Outlet all sell mattresses, as well. “We're going to change its name from McKnight Road to Goodnight Road,” said Craig Linner, president of the business group Ross Township Business and Economic Development Inc., or RED.

But, he said, mattress stores are better than empty storefronts. “We need businesses in Ross Township,” longtime Ross resident John Schalcosky said. “How do we get people to shop here? More mattress stores is not the answer.” Schalcosky, 31, said he would like to see more entertainment venues and restaurants coming to Ross, rather than mattress stores. “Once you start to get over five (mattress stores), you start to wonder how many you really need,” he said. But despite the disinterest from some residents, those connected with some of the existing mattress stores say that area is the place to be for the business of bedding. “Business is fantastic,” said Joseph Orris, vice president of sales for locally owned chain Mattress World Inc. “We're still here, and we're not going anywhere.” Orris said he has been in the business for a long time and that there aren't as many mattress stores on McKnight Road as there once were. “There were three times as many mattress stores in the early '90s.

They just weren't as brash,” said Orris, noting that there are more corporate mattress stores now than there were 20 years ago. Jarrett Rodriguez, district manager for Houston-based Mattress Firm, said that a recovering economy created a recent boom for the mattress industry. “Realistically, we just look for highly visible locations,” Rodriguez said about Mattress Firm's two McKnight Road locations. Mattress stores often stay competitive by flocking together, which keeps prices low for consumers, Rodriguez said. “There will usually be enough businesses to go around,” he said. Audrey Guskey, an associate professor of marketing at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, said competing businesses that sell “durable goods,” which are more expensive and are not often purchased, tend to group together. “There's a bit more of a risk attached to it,” said Guskey, who noted that those purchasing mattresses likely will shop around at several different stores.
