The June 11 program of the South Windsor Historical Society,“The One-Room Schoolhouse: What was it really like?” will explore the operation of typical district schools. Guest speaker Michael Day uses a variety of firsthand accounts and other primary sources to show what education was like in the 19th century, addressing many of the typical questions people have about  curriculum, discipline, class size, the school day and school year, and teacher training, pay, and living arrangements.        The program will be held at Unity Church, 919 Ellington Rd.,at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 ($3 for Society members).  Refreshments and a tour of the Society’s nearby Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse Museum will follow the program. The former one-room school is the only one in South Windsor not destroyed or converted to a home. At one time, there were a dozen district schools here, including three operated jointly with neighboring towns.         A former elementary school teacher and principal from Barkhamsted, Day is the author of four books and numerous articles about 19th century education and one-room schoolhouses.




He is also the owner and publisher of Clippership Publications, which produces replicas of early schoolbooks for museums around the country."The Golden Age of Whaling", 919 Ellington Rd., South Windsor, CT In the 1800's, New London, CT, was the 3rd largest whaling port in the United States. The industry soared through most of the century, with product sales totaling $11 million in its peak year. Callinan majored in English at Central Connecticut State University and minored in music, later earning a master’s degree in liberal arts at Wesleyan University. He taught for five years before serving the Marine Corps and beginning a music career. He was part of the Morgans, a Hartford-based folk band, and a rock group called the Twisting Tornadoes, but switched to solo work, playing more than a dozen instruments and focusing on regional folk music. In 1991, he was named Connecticut's first state troubadour and was subsequently designated as a  master teaching artist by the Connecticut Commission on the Arts.




He has had many radio and television credits in addition to hundreds of performances to regional organizations. Admission to the April 30th performance at 7 p.m. is $5 ($3 for historical society members.  Refreshments will be served.A virtual tour of significant local homes will  be offered by the South Windsor Historical Society April 9 at Wood Memorial Library, 783 Main St. Doris Burgdorf will present “South Windsor Houses that Connect Us to National History” in the 7 p.m. slide program, which is free and open to the public.  Representing various parts of town and time periods, the homes are those of past residents who played roles in American history. A life-long resident of South Windsor, Burgdorf is the designer of our town seal, the illustrator of “Long Hill; The Mary Jeannette Elmore Story,” and author of “A Country Mile” about the historic district on Main Street. She is currently working on the committee to restore Union School and is doing the research for a new book about the houses on the rest of Main Street.

The program at Wood Memorial Library, 783Main St., at 7 p.m. is free and open to the public.




Society President Brian Rivard will focus on the construction techniques and craftsmen's skills involved in restoring the castle/fort of Guedelon, which he visited in the fall. The 25-year project relies on reverse archaeology to recreate the methods of the past.
