Steve Spiegel, a development partner at Atlanta-based Hendon Properties that owns the mall, said Conn’s HomePlus will occupy 44,000 square feet of space. The new building will combine both spaces occupied by the Best Buy and Petco stores.Conn's HomePlus Chief Marketing Officer Jamie Pierce said Rocky Mount is a market that is in demand for the products and in-house financing that the company offers."Our exclusive in-store financing provides a pathway for customers to purchase high-quality furniture, appliances and TVs at affordable, low monthly payments," Pierce said. "We are looking forward to establishing roots in Rocky Mount and continuing to serve the people of North Carolina."Conn’s HomePlus has signed a 10-year lease to move into Golden East Crossing, Spiegel said. He said construction for the store started at the end of March and Conn’s is slated to open mid-August. The new store will provide more than 25 local jobs, Pierce said."The company is excited to meet the area’s applicants and create a store workforce comprised of people that represent the Rocky Mount community," she said.
"We plan to begin the hiring process at the end of May. Conn’s is the first major anchor store to be coming to the mall since Dunham’s Sports opened in April 2013. Conn’s has more than 100 locations in 12 states across the country. The Rocky Mount store will be the retail chain’s eighth store in North Carolina.Mayor David Combs said Conn’s coming into the market brings additional jobs and another retail option for people looking for furniture, appliances and electronics.Conn’s upcoming arrival at the mall is a sign of things improving since the downturn of the 2008 Great Recession, Spiegel said.“We’re very excited and we’re finally seeing the benefits from some turnaround in the local economy,” he said. “This should be the start of adding additional tenants in the future. Conn’s tend to appeal to a middle market like Rocky Mount. They tend to locate in markets like that. I think they will appeal to the customer base in Rocky Mount very well along with the other surrounding areas.”
