Having the right mattress can be crucial to getting a good night's sleep. So how do you choose the right one for you -- and for your wallet? The first step is picking the right store. Consumer Reports recently surveyed 20,000 of its subscribers to find out which mattress retailers people are most satisfied (and dissatisfied) with -- based on price, selection, shopping experience, cleanliness and other factors relevant to each type of retailer. Read more: 6 best mattresses for couples According to the survey, traditional sellers, mattress chains and department stores scored the worst. Shoppers were most dissatisfied with the prices and shopping experience. The survey also found that price is the biggest factor for most shoppers, and people who shopped around were able to find better deals elsewhere. Even some online retailers scored high in the rankings -- based on price, selection and on-time delivery. According to the survey, here are the best and worst stores.

Orders Shipped To You We don’t carry inventory at the store. Instead, all orders are conveniently shipped to you free, in 2-4 business days.Whether you are on the buying or selling end of the furniture life cycle, consignment is a hot option. Design tastemakers — stagers, designers, set artists and brand-conscious consumers — have long reaped the benefits of home consignment stores. As our society becomes more waste-conscious, consignment stores thrive.

Immediate gratification is a welcome byproduct of shopping consignment stores, as there’s no waiting eight to 12 weeks for delivery. And consumers can find such high-end furniture lines as Stickley, Hendredon and Maitland Smith at a fraction of the retail cost and generally in good condition, as consignment store owners tend to be persnickety about accepting merchandise. Here’s how it works: After the store owner accepts a piece for consignment, the seller signs a contract detailing the terms (starting price, length of consignment period and the agreed-upon share of proceeds). At the end of the consignment period, which is often 90 days, if the piece remains unsold, the seller can either pick it up or it becomes the property of the store. So if you’ve got redecorating fever but are feeling gun-shy about spending, peruse the gently used furniture and home accessories in local consignment stores. Even better, forge a relationship with a consignment boutique, as the proprietor will gladly sniff out items that suit your style and taste.

One last tip: If you fall in love with a piece, buy it immediately. Because if you love it, someone else will too. A favorite among the locals in Steamboat Springs, the name “Annie” is commonly used as a verb, as in “getting Annie’d.” Storeowner Annie Tisch says it means when someone “plays the wait-and-see game too long and misses out on a coveted piece.” Even Tisch has been “Annie’d” a time or two. So at Annie’s, the longer a piece stays unsold on the showroom floor, the lower the price. The store also carries original artwork and jewelry. And to prove just how popular home decor consignment is in this economy, Tisch opened her second store in July. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. 405 Angler’s Drive and 1755 Central Park Ave., Steamboat Springs; The majority of this Basalt store’s consignments come directly from Aspen. Need we say more? In business since 1998, store owner Tigger Ash says many longtime customers plan mountain road trips around a stop at her consignment showroom.

Hours: Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m; Saturday 11 a.m to 5 p.m. 180 Fiou Lane No. 103, Basalt; 3. Furniture Consignment by Kristynn Open just over a year, this is a 6,300-square-foot consignment store located along Fort Collins’ main shopping thoroughfare. Owner Kristynn Jenkins reviews each piece personally before agreeing to contract with the owner. Her discerning eye insures only mint-condition pieces reach the showroom floor. In addition to furniture, Jenkins also consigns original artwork from local talent. Hours: Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 2834 S. College Ave., Fort Collins; 4. The Amazing Garage Sale Like no other garage sale around, this place in north Boulder is part museum, part art gallery and all fabulous. Owner Judy Lester has a penchant for midcentury modern, Danish modern, the Beatles and British pop art. It shows with designer names such as Eames, Knoll and Wakefield in every corner. Best off all, Lester believes in doing business the old-fashioned way.

“We trust our customers,” she says, “and allow them to take it home and make payments.” Hours: Monday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 4919 N. Broadway, Boulder; New to Denver’s consignment scene, owner Heidi Anderes is appreciative of preserving the world’s limited resources and is committed to finding new homes for passed- down furnishings. Her store is nestled in Denver’s Antique Row and offers an eclectic mix of vintage, retro, traditional and contemporary offerings. Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m; Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 1745 S. Broadway; Relocated to Centennial from its original spot in Evergreen, Design Repeats has been in the consignment business for eight years. Owner Suzie Ouellette has carefully merchandised and curated vignettes of name-brand furniture from the likes of Bassett, Ethan Allen, Henderson, Hickory and other recognizable and coveted lines. Hours: Monday thru Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.;

Sunday noon to 4 p.m. 8200 S. Colorado Blvd., Centennial; Koru (pronounced “kaw roo”) is a native New Zealand term meaning “new life” or “new beginning.” Such is the goal of owners Linsey and Che Kelly for each piece of furniture they bring into this cozy Cherry Creek North store with an ambiance more like an art gallery than a resale boutique. Filled with Asian-inspired furniture and ornamental decor on one recent visit, this shop’s motifs can change at a moment’s notice, depending on what is placed on consignment. Hours: Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Sunday noon to 5 p.m. 2434 E. Sixth Ave.; Owned and operated by a mother-daughter team, Aurora’s Welcome Home meets a wide range of decor needs. Mother Delora Coffey has a background in renovating and restoring Victorian homes. Daughter Nicole Jones is well- versed in home staging and photography. This duo’s carefully and meticulously decorated showroom blurs the distinction between retail and resale — except for the lower prices.
