These days, a fence with "no trespassing" signs surrounds the Lake Harris resort consisting of concrete-block buildings that the sign dating to the 1950s advertised.On Friday, the dilapidated Old Florida symbol with a fish jumping out of the top came down. The non-functioning neon sign was removed, destined for the scrap heap unless someone steps in to preserve it, according to the sign-company worker who hauled it off. City spokesman Derek Hudson said a resident "was concerned about how it looked" and complained to the city, leading to a search about who owned the sign and ultimately that it should come down because "city ordinances wouldn't allow them to rehab it." City code says that the owners of any sign not in use for 90 days "shall be taken down," but in this case, the sign has not been in use for decades."I came here in 1988 and it's always been there," said Leesburg City Commissioner Jay Hurley, whose district includes the property."We've redone the [U.S. 441] corridor now — you've got sidewalks and lights, so that little rustic feel is gone, if you will," he said.
"But by the same token I think we've kept that Florida feel." The sign's demise was the talk at nearby Play It Again Sports, which shared the property with the sign."It's an old historical landmark," said Kerry Hill, 52, of Fruitland Park. "It definitely doesn't need to be destroyed because it's part of Lake County's history."Leesburg has grown from a population of about 7,400 in the 1950s, when citrus was king, to about 22,000 today.Play It Again Sports store owner Chase Crouch had no idea it was being taken down until he learned it was being dismantled. He never really took much notice of it."I've lived in this county all my life," said Crouch, 29. " I never even looked at it, to be honest with you."Tampa-based Validus Group, which owns the building housing Play It Again Sports as well as the vintage sign, said the city gave notice last year to take it down."We actually wanted to refurbish it," said Israel Labrador, construction and maintenance manger for the company. "It was just, you know, advertisement."
