Hot deals and products in our massive selectionMy Wife was going to a Convention at Durham College, and a few days before she was to leave, I read an article on CTV's website about the new epidemic of Bed Bugs. I then started to google more about the subject, and to my surprise the same word "epidemic" was being used to describe the condition all over North American cities.

Just before my Wife left, I told her about what I had learned (she's a clean freak) and handed her a small magnifying glass, and a print out of basic instructions on what to look for. I said, look, the chances are 1000 to 1 you're not going to find anything, so don't worry too much this is just a precaution. She sighed and said, OK thanks for worrying me to death now. Well, wouldn't you know she calls me from the Hotel and says she found a small bug under the mattress on the box spring near the headboard. I asked her what it looked like and she said it was small, oval, and brown. I asked her, was it about the size of a sesame seed and she said yes. She immediately called the front desk and told them what she had found. The lady at the desk said: That's no good, we'll find you another room right now. Before my Wife took anything into the next room she spent 1 hour searching everywhere (I was on the cell) I told her to She didn't find anything in the new room. Then she went bought 2X size Ziplocs and anything that went into the new room was Ziplocked.

The next day she told some of her co-conventionists (at the hotel next door) about what happened (figured they should know too) and they couldn't stop laughing. She was a little annoyed at these people's cavalier attitude about the situation. They won't be laughing if they find out they've transported this parasite to their homes, and then find out what a nightmare an infestation of bed bugs can be to eliminate from your home. If you can eliminate them. And the cost is apparently huge with no guarantees they can get rid of them. What are the odds that the first room she goes into after I read these stories has bed bugs? Now I completely understand that all these articles I'm reading is not just media hype. There really is an epidemic out there. Needless to say my hotel days are done for a while until this problem is addressed with proper insecticides, and not the "green" garbage that's being used today, with no results. It's a perfect storm for these parasites, the ban on insecticides (that actually work) and the explosion in world travel.

Sorry for the long post. PS: The hotel was the Marriott in Whitby. They were good about it reducing the room price (even though the college was paying for it) and flagging the room. If you haven’t already, please take a moment and write a review of the hotel. More people read the hotel reviews than the forum area when researching accommodations. The problem with using insecticides is that sooner or later the bugs build up resistance to them ... like the so-called "super lice" that have been around now for a decade or more. Anyone with school-aged kids who has ever gone through that knows what a nightmare it is! (And I speak from experience.) I'm not saying they shouldn't be used for bedbugs, but they are not the whole solution. Rescue Team, bed bugs can afflict any hotel, dorm, shelter, apartment building, home, hostel, B&B etc. etc. Bed bugs are not a cleanliness issue - they hitch-hike from one place to another. IMO, for a traveller to avoid one hotel because of a past report of them is useless ... a known infestation will be treated, and there is no guarantee another hotel you may choose won't have them.

I think Vigilant has called it exactly.... travellers need to be informed and take precautions. Check over the bed, use the luggage rack and never, EVER put your suitcase on a bed. And if you wake up with bites, follow procedures to make sure you don't take the bugs home with you. There are lots of websites out there with information. Here is a nifty website that tracks hotel and apartment listings who have had bed bug infestations:Though i am not sure if they have a process which authenticates the claims of infestation. I am not sure if i need authentication though... if the hotel is mentioned i probably would not stay there. I think it was good of you to post the story of your wife's experience... bed bugs are one of the (many) hazards of travel. It is sort of "buyer be ware" when it comes to this issue, because it is so invisible until the lights go out. Your sharing with everyone here, will help to educate more people about this nasty little creature and how to SPOT them, but more importantly how to STOP them.

KRP329 has raised some valid issues. I too make a point of it now to NOT put my suitcase on the bed, either at the hotel or when I get home. And I launder everything that comes out of my suitcase when I get home. I read somewhere that extreme heat or cold is a sure fire way to kill the little buggers. I even heard someone say you should store your luggage in the garage... ok, as a Canadian, I am not going to that extreme considering my luggage would be beyond freezing cold the next time I wanted to pack for Florida... But I do vacuum my bags and put them away in the basement so that they are away from everything else in my living space. I think most hotels are aware there is a epidemic they are battling (if not currently in their own hotels, then just keeping the nasties out of their hotels) and I think a lot of that prevention has to come down the the housekeeping staff doing a proper job with cleaning, especially vacuuming (matresses included). I think some places just do a change the linens and "fluff & dust" when obviously that isn't going to cut it.
