Photo courtesy of John Merwin Most people spend about a third of their lives in bed or asleep, making the mattress industry a pretty big business: About 600 mattress-and-bedding companies in the U.S. rack up $7 billion in sales a year, experts say.
In business for 21 years, the Phoenix company has expanded from a single store in Mesa to 23 stores across Arizona and Utah. From his perch as the owner of the firm, John Merwin has seen a lot since Brooklyn Bedding debuted in 1995. “The technology has changed in the bedding industry to the point where we can now compress high-quality mattresses, put them in a box and it’s economical to ship them," Merwin said. Unlike most mattress stores, Brooklyn Bedding, formerly known as R&S Mattress, manufactures its own mattresses. Last year, the company built a 148,000-square-foot production facility in Phoenix. Aside from its 23 stores, Brooklyn Bedding sells mattresses directly to consumers online, which offers considerable savings. “We’ve seen a dramatic change in the last five to six years as far as what’s happening on the e-commerce front,” Merwin said. Latex and foam mattresses have become a big trend in recent years, Merwin said, but the customary mattress that most of us have slept on all our lives still drives the industry and it’s not going away anytime soon.
“The traditional, inner-spring mattresses that have been built and sold for years and years account for probably 85 percent of the mattresses sold,” Merwin said. “So, while there has been a significant trend toward foam and latex and things like that, the inner springs still dominate the market. Just in the last year and a half, manufacturers have come out with some really good coil units that we can actually compress and put in a box. So, I think the bed-and-box business is going to continue to grow.” Mattress sales are slowing: The International Sleep Products Association lowered its marginal unit growth forecast for 2016 from 1.5 percent to 0.5 percent, Furniture Today reported in late October. Mattress retailing in Arizona is highly competitive, but there are just a handful of manufacturers here, Merwin says. Very few market players actually have a local factory where they manufacture their own mattresses. “I think it’s really saturated right now,” said Merwin.
”I mean, Mattress Firm has about 120 stores in the Valley. Tuft & Needle is spending ... on advertising. You’ve got us, and then you’ve got all the furniture stores. All these companies do a lot of mattress sales.” Despite the competition, Brooklyn Bedding should bring in almost $60 million in revenue in 2016 and continue growing next year, Merwin says. “Everything is trending that way. It’s definitely getting more and more competitive, but we don’t see any reason why we would take a step backward.” In fact, Merwin envisions Brooklyn Bedding continuing its growth outside of Arizona and Utah. “A very large portion of our revenue is created outside of the Arizona market due to online orders and shipping. Because I can put a mattress in a box and because of the size of the box can put it in, I can ship a bed from Phoenix to New York basically cheaper than if I had to deliver a bed locally, with two delivery guys.” A decade ago, he says, that might have been unimaginable.
