If the items you have match what we can rehome, please check this page for our upcoming opening times. If you have a cot, car seat, pram or stroller, or toys, these items have mandatory safety standards. We also check safety requirements of other products based on ACCC and other expert advice like SIDS and Kids and RACV. Please take a few minutes to read the details below. We can re-home a pre-loved cot if it complies with the Safety Standard for cots: AS/NZS 2172:2003. To comply this standard, the date of manufacture and the mattress dimensions should be stamped onto the base slats. If your cot is Boori, King Parrot or Ikea, you might not be able to find the date of manufacture stamped, however we are confident these models are safe to rehome. If the cot was bought overseas (anywhere other than NZ), it might not comply with the standard. Is crucial to baby safety to assemble the cot properly by following the instructions and using the right screws and parts. Please use the assembly instructions to check that you have them all and secure them along with assembly instructions in a zip lock bag taped to the base of the cot.

Also please disassemble your cot and cable tie it together. If you have lost the assembly instructions and/or a screw is missing or bent, we will have to source it from the manufacturer. To get the correct set of assembly instructions we will need: date of manufacture, brand, model number and country of manufacture - all this information is stamped on the base slats. If you are unsure please email us a photo of the end for quick idenfification. If that’s the case we can only re-home it if is one of the following brands as we are confident that their manufacturers can supply spare parts and assembly instructions: Here is a blog we wrote about the importance of cot safety. Here is an article from the ACCC about recent cot recalls. We can rehome a mattress that fits your cot, as long as it has no marks or stains, is less than 10 years old, and have a label with the mattress dimensions printed on it. Please cover your mattress with a couple of old fitted cot sheets to keep it clean in transit.

We would love all your cot linen too if you are ready to pass it on, and mattress protectors are also very valuable to us. We do not need any cot mattresses without the cot to go with it. We can rehome a car restraint if it is less than 8 years old. The date of manufacture should be printed on a sticker somewhere on the side or base. There should also be a red safety standard sticker AS/NZS 1754. We cannot rehome a car restraint from hard rubbish as there is no way we can be sure that it has not been in an accident. We do not rehome booster seats without tether straps or foam booster seats. We can rehome freestanding highchairs if they are less than 10 years old and have a tray, safety harness, are sturdy and secure, with brakes (if on casters) and are perfectly clean. Please see this article for some cleaning tips. If you can't find the date of manufacture please email us a photograph. We do not rehome booster seats that strap to chairs or hang from tables. We can rehome a bassinette if it has a wide stable base, or if it is on wheels at least 2 of the 4 must lock.

Please remove all ribbons and ties to prevent strangulation. The sides should be at least 300mm high measured from the top of the mattress base and it should have a firm mattress that is a snug fit and is not thicker than 75mm. We can rehome a pram or stroller with a 5 point harness, faultless brakes, a fully reclining back to accomodate a newborn and a sun-hood. Prams should meet AS/NZS 2088:2000. If you bought your pram overseas (somewhere other than New Zealand) it might not meet Australian standards. If you are not sure of the make and model please just email us a photo. Please see this article for some cleaning tips. We can rehome change tables with some form of roll-off protection such as a child safety harness, and raised sides and ends at least 100mm high. Social workers and maternal and child health nurses prefer folding change tables as the families they support often live in cramped conditions. It is difficult to rehome a solid wooden change table, but here are some ideas to use them.

If you have a safety gate to donate, please remember to include the adjuster screws and bolts, suction cups for mounting on the wall, any extension bolts etc with it, in a clear plastic zip lock bag, taped to the gate. Please donate good condition Front Pack Carriers and Buckle Carriers. Carriers should have working buckles, no fraying on the straps or body and be clean. Instructions should be included where possible. We re-home carriers that can be used on the front in an upright position. We do not rehome homemade carriers. All clothing and linen should be freshly laundered please and packed into bags with the size and gender clearly labelled on the outside to help us rotate stock as quickly as possible. We stock sizes from 0000 to Size 10 years. If clothing or linen has been in storage it’s important that it is washed again before donating to us. St Kilda Mums prides itself on passing on items in great condition. It makes all the difference to the mum on the receiving end.

If you are not sure whether your clothing donation is suitable or not, a good barometer is would you give it to the children of a good friend? Our clothing bags are gifts and we want the mum who receives the bag to feel that she has a good friend or relative who cares. Please note that we do not rehome soft bedding such as pillows, quilts, duvets and bumpers as these increase the risk of sudden unexpected infant death. They may cover the baby’s face and obstruct breathing or cause overheating. Older babies in a cot can be at an increased risk of a sleeping accident by using pillows and bumpers as a step to climb up and fall out of the cot. It is safer to wait until the child starts to sleep in a bed before introducing a pillow or other soft bedding. For more info please refer to SIDS and Kids If you like to knit or crochet we are always short of cot blankets (1.25m x 1.5m). These are an essential part of our cot linen bundles and we need donations of blankets more than any other knitted item.

We rehome good quality toys and puzzles if they are smaller than 45cm in size. We do not rehome large toys, ride on toys, Tonka toys, activity centres, rocking horses, trikes, bikes etc. We do not rehome soft toys, with the exception of very small baby soft toys and we ask that you please wash pre-loved soft toys before donating. Please remove all spent batteries before donating. We can only rehome battery operated toys if the batteries are secured in place with a screw. We do not rehome any toys with lithium batteries as these are extremely dangerous if swallowed. We do not rehome any toys filled with beans as they may present a choking and inhalation hazard. We also do not rehome any maternity or adult clothing, nor electrical items such as monitors. Please review this list of what we can and cannot home and if in doubt please email us. Please see our FAQs if you have a question that is not covered here. Next steps - getting your donations to St Kilda. Please go to this page to see our opening hours.
