In looking for ways to improve my quality of life in small and cost-effective ways, I've been thinking about my sleep habitat and the fact that I have pretty relentless lower back and hip pain that's worse in the morning.
In reading responses to other questions here, it seems like a fair number have found some relief by sleeping on either a memory foam mattress or topper. Since my current mattress is just a few years old and very firm, I'm looking at toppers -- but I have zero experience with memory foam. Is this a good idea at all? A similar question was asked previously six years ago. Hopefully, there's more experience and new information since then. I am tall, large and generally a side sleeper, but tend to shift around a lot. Could I ask your recommendations for a decent thickness and firmness? Is 4" thick with 5 pound density appropriate? Can I do better? Where's the best buy as far as quality for the buck? Are there any specific eBay sellers that are highly regarded for memory foam? Our local Costco only has a 2.5" topper, so I am probably looking at buying online. I have allergies to dust etc. Best way to handle this with a topper that is basically open-cell foam? A certain type of cover?
Any additional instructions regarding large dogs sleeping on memory foam (aside from the fact that they will likely love it beyond measure) -- special care tips? very hot to sleep on it even with mattress protector 4-inch memery foam mattress topperVery comfortable and soft to lay on. firmer than I wanted nice mattress topper - good quality - but not as plush as I was hoping. My Wife loves it but it is too thick for me. Every one who has tried it really like it. fortable and very durable. I've had this for a few years and it feels brand new and I sleep on it every night. Good Quality Memory Foam have had this for 3 years and its amazing Have had serious back problems most of my life, and up until I got this topper, I didn't know what a good night sleep actually was. I've had this topper for 6 years now, I it's still as amazing as the day I got it. Best thing I've ever bought in my life, and would recommend to anyone! At 4", this topper was WAYY to high for our bed. We are big people and we sank much too deeply into this topper. Moving around was difficult. We lived with it for several weeks and just never got used to it.
Eventually i cut it up into sections and donated the pieces to a local pet shelter for dog beds. They were extremely greatful and i felt i did not throw away money. Like sleeping on a cloud!!! Absolutely love this memory foam topper! I purchased in 2013, it's now 2016 and topper shows no signs of breakdown, or wear. I did purchase an amazing cover to go with it to help keep topper in good shape. It came in a heavy medium sized box, once I took it out of the packaging, topper began to transform before my eyes. Didn't take long to come to size. There was a slight odor, but smell dissipated after a couple days. It is still a bit heavy to move around, and I will say it seems as though it's a little shorter than size ordered but you can't really tell (about 1 in or 1 1/2 in). You will definitely need deep sheets for this topper. I like a soft bed, and it sure is perfect for me, like sleeping on a cloud. It contours to your body and reshapes almost immediately. I think I could put in on cement and still sleep great!!
My boyfriend on the other hand prefers a firmer bed, so it took him a month or so to get used to sleeping on this when he moved in, he kept saying it was too soft and he was sinking in. He is an all position sleeper, but he began sleeping on his back more with this topper. At times he may sleep on his side, which I will say, may cause some back pain in the morning. Don't recommend for side or stomach sleepers. But he started to get better sleep and toss and turn less. He said he has gotten used to it and would like it a little firmer, but he admits he is sleeping better. Just remember this memory foam topper may get hot when sleeping, doesn't have gel infused cooling layer. Also with memory foam if it's cold it will seem hard, so in winter, the topper may seem hard at first but once your body warms it up, it contours to you. So I would highly recommend this topper if you are not quite ready to make a full commitment and purchase a memory foam bed yet. This is the next best thing!!! Used on top of a super firm queen mattress and it prevented having to purchase a whole new mattress & bowstring, saving hundreds of dollars.
