Foam mattresses provide exceptional pressure relief and use foam cores to ensure proper spinal alignment and back support.
They also tend to last longer than innerspring mattresses in the same price range. If you want to keep your costs down, look for an innerspring mattress that has a tied coil system with thick coil gauges (below 15). In a tied coil system, the coils are linked together, resulting in a very solid, strong level of support. If you sleep with a partner and motion transfer is an issue, then you should consider an individually pocketed coil system with a thick coil gauge. If you suffer from a medical condition that affects your back, then the best thing you can do is speak to a qualified physician about which mattress is best for your particular case. If your back pain is pressure related, then a mattress with a medium to soft comfort level is a great choice. It is critical for a new mattress to get the proper support from the foundation. Some manufacturers use a foundation that moves up and down as weight is applied to it (yielding). A yielding foundation acts much like a large shock absorber, taking a lot of the nightly wear and tear. These types of foundations increase the life of the mattress. Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster, Bassett, and Spring Air use these types of foundations. A mattress designed for a yielding foundation that is put on a non yielding foundation will not last as long. Some manufacturers use a foundation that has a solid surface and does not move up and down as weight is applied to it (non-yielding). A non-yielding foundation adds stability to the sleep set which will lessen the movement transferred between partners which will provide more undisturbed sleep.
Simmons uses this type of foundation. A mattress designed for a non yielding foundation that is put on a yielding foundation will sag over time and not provide the correct back support. The best way to find out if it's time for a new mattress is to ask your body. Do you wake up with aches and pains? Do you toss and turn a lot throughout the night? Can you see excessive body indentations and deep cavities in the mattress? These are the best ways to determine whether or not your mattress is still capable of properly supporting your body. If your mattress isn't delivering the amount of comfort and support your body requires for healthy sleep, then you should purchase a new one.
