2BR understands that The Duchy of Lancaster, which owns the theatre, has instructed its solicitors to put the theatre on the market on 16th October 2016 - despite passionate local efforts to return the theatre to its former glory. Members of the Burnley Empire Theatre Trust (BETT) have worked tirelessly to raise funds for a viability study which is currently underway to determine the building's future - all of which could potentially go to waste. Responding to the news, a spokesperson from BETT said: "The news that the Burnley Empire has been put up for auction without warning has come as something of a surprise. Burnley Empire Theatre Trust has been working tirelessly against the clock for months to save the Empire, a Grade II listed building designed by the renowned Victorian architect Bertie Crewe. So many people have contacted us to support the project to save this lost gem. "The fact that they (The Duchy of Lancaster) would put it up for auction at this key moment, knowing the Viability Study is actually underway to find the best future for a community facility is a disappointment, to say the least.
The Theatres Trust congratulated the Burnley public for their support in their recent Theatre Buildings at Risk launch as a shining example of how a community can get behind a project like this, and they have been in contact with the Duchy's solicitors on our behalf throughout the campaign. "At present, we are waiting for the outcome of the Viability Study, to which the council and all our supporters contributed so generously, and this does seem like a slap in the face for them as well as for us. Burnley has lost so many of its historic buildings, for the Duchy of Lancaster to disregard the public support for the project to save one of its proudest is surprising. (Sophie Gibson and Shaun McCree from the Burnley Empire Theatre Trust) Sophie Gibson is one of the original BETT committee members: "We're very surprised and disappointed that this news has come out of the blue. As far as our campaign has gone; The Duchy of Lancaster has always been aware that the Burnley Empire Theatre Trust formed with the intention of saving the theatre and has always been interested in purchasing the theatre - so it's definitely a surprise that they haven't held off putting it up for auction.
"It's a listed building so it can't just be turned into a shopping centre but we would be very disappointed if we can't continue our work if the theatre ends up in the wrong hands. A lot of guidelines go with the listing of the building and there would be a lot of problems if someone bought it with different intentions - not realising what the building is, what it was, or what it can be. Nobody can purchase the building and expect to turn it into something completely different. "Although this is happening, things could still turn around. The viability study might come back positive and hopefully we can go ahead with our plans for the theatre."
