Sleep like a baby when you firm up your old mattress. Over time, a mattress can become uncomfortable from uneven wear. You can make your mattress more comfy by firming it up to create a more supportive, even sleeping surface. Whether you prefer an extra-hard bed or simply need to tweak a soft mattress, you're on your way to a more restful night's sleep when you firm up your mattress. Top It Add a special pad to make the mattress more comfy. A thicker mattress pad provides increased comfort and greater support over a thinner one. Choose from either a latex or memory foam pad to top your old mattress. Latex foam pads are available in a variety of thicknesses to add the firming support level you need with a soft feel. Likewise, memory foam mattress pads are available in assorted densities but conform to your body's shape to give you support where you need it. Board It Place a bed board between the mattress and box springs. A bed board typically consists of a solid piece of plywood or several wooden slats tucked inside a canvas cover.

You can purchase a bed board or make one yourself, but either way, the bed board should be as long and as wide as the mattress to provide complete underlying support. Box It Exchange existing box springs for a new replacement. Because a mattress and box springs work together as a unified shock absorber, if you don't currently have a set of box springs, adding this foundation gives your mattress immediate firmness. Box springs are designed with strong steel coils to deliver support; the best box springs compress and slightly give when you apply pressure to them. You can add years of comfort and usefulness to a mattress with quality box springs. Turn It Improve the firm feel of an old mattress without spending a dime. It's important to rotate and flip your mattress at least once every six months to avoid impressions and sags from sleeping in the same spot every night. If you have a pillow-top mattress with the pillow only on one side, you can't flip the mattress but you can rotate it 180 degrees to more evenly distribute your body weight over the top of the mattress.

A lack of support causes you to wake up sore and aching, feeling as if you have not slept at all. Pillowtop mattresses have an extra layer of padding on top that makes the mattress softer. A pillowtop mattress, however, can be made firmer and more supportive if you dislike the softness. The support offered by the mattress has little to do with the layer of padding on top. Remove the pillowtop mattress and the box spring. Inspect the bed frame. A sagging bed frame causes problems with how supportive and firm the pillowtop mattress can be. Tighten all the screws on the bed frame with a screwdriver, or if there are significant alignment problems, take the frame apart and put it back together. Remove the bed frame and box spring.

Box springs and bed frames are meant to give the mattress support, but if they are old and not doing their job correctly, they can cause the pillowtop mattress above to cave in toward the middle or sag. Lay the mattress directly on the floor and try sleeping on it for a few nights to see how the support improves. Lay a foam mattress pad on top of the mattress. If you are sharing the bed with someone who prefers the softness, use a foam mattress pad that is narrow enough to only cover your area of the bed. Place the mattress pad between the sheet and the mattress, laying pieces of shelf liner between the mattress and the pad to keep it from slipping. Make the bed as you normally would. Use safety pins to attach the foam pad to the raised edges found on a pillowtop mattress. This prevents the pad from slipping away. Replace the pillowtop mattress. A pillowtop mattress is designed to be soft but it should still be supportive. If your pillowtop mattress is not giving you the support you need, choose another that has a higher number of springs and a lower spring gauge.

I've always preferred firm mattresses and I've been stuck on a too-soft mattress for about 6 months now, so I finally decided to try this.I ordered a bamboo mat Qbedding Carbonized Bamboo Summer Sleeping Mat Cooling Mattress Topper Pad, Queen (No Pillow Shams) to put on top of the soft mattress, then I put this foam on top of the bamboo mat. So physical performance-wise: my bed is significantly taller, yes, and I do think the middle is compressing a little. This is after a week on this mattress; I do expect settling, so I'm hoping this finds a comfortable and still firm equilibrium.
