You scored a beautiful Lloyd Loom piece, possibly on eBay or at a local thrift shop; but the chair, settee, or table needs quite a bit of love before you can display it proudly in your home. Since the Lloyd Loom process essentially starts with paper and wire, the material is delicate and easily damaged if you don't know what you're doing. Take the time to learn how to restore Lloyd Loom furniture so that you can enjoy its beauty for years. Whether you are cleaning or painting the piece, find the supplies you require on eBay or in at a hardware store or home goods retailer near your home. Before you begin to restore your Lloyd Loom piece, you need to understand the material with which you are working. Marshall B. Lloyd created the first Lloyd Loom fabric by twisting kraft paper around fine metal wires and weaving fabric with the resulting wire-and-paper threads. When he sold the patent to W. Lusty & Sons, a British company, his invention blossomed into an entire line of furniture. As you work with your Lloyd Loom piece, remember its history, and keep in mind that at a basic level, it's paper and wire on a wooden frame— also called wicker.

You want to avoid a heavy sanding job that might damage the piece, so pick a 120-grit fine sandpaper to work with. Sand lightly, just enough to rough up the surface slightly and help the paint stick to it. Next, pull out the vacuum. You need a wand attachment or upholstery attachment for this phase, since you must get all the fine dust from the sanding process out of the cracks and crevices of the wicker. Now that the vacuuming is done, grab a clean rag or two. Dampen the rag with a little water and rub down the furniture, wiping away any leftover dirt or dust. If you encounter tough spots of grime, try a tiny bit of dish detergent and a firm hand to get the layer of crusted dirt off. If you're dealing with a large piece of furniture, such as a settee or a big table, have a family member or a friend lend you a hand. The cleaning process goes much faster with two or three.First, pick a work area with plenty of airflow, where the spray paint will not damage any surrounding items.

A large, empty garage with the door open or a backyard area works well. Cover the ground or floor of your work space with a big drop cloth or tarp to protect against paint spray and splatters. Don your gloves, your safety goggles, and a mask as well if you're sensitive to the fume of the spray paint. Since the fine spray of droplets will probably affect your clothing and shoes, wear something old. If you have chosen a paint color that is much different that the piece's original color, start with a coat of primer. Spray it on with long, even strokes. Some paint companies create paint with a primer included, so you may want to try that if you are pressed for time with this project. A paint and primer combination eliminates one extra step of the process. Next, apply the spray paint itself, using the same sweeping movements that you did with the primer. Keep an eye out for bubbles and drips so that you can correct them while the paint is still wet. Having a paintbrush handy helps out with these small fixes.

Let the first coat dry thoroughly, then apply a second coat. You may need to add three or more layers of paint to ensure complete coverage for the piece. Wait between each coat, and give the furniture plenty of time to dry after the final coat of paint. To preserve your paint job and to extend the life of your reclaimed Lloyd Loom furniture, finish off the project with a coat of varnish or acrylic sealant. If you're looking for Lloyd Loom or other wicker furniture to upcycle, check eBay for a plethora of furniture in this style. When you type "Lloyd Loom furniture" into the search bar on any eBay webpage, you encounter plenty of listings within seconds. Use the search filters to narrow down your hunt a bit, choosing the price range, condition, seller type, and style that you prefer. Once you snag a chair or a nightstand in this lovely woven style, start refurbishing it to bring out its beauty and artistry to the best advantage. After seeing your finished project, your friends may decide that a gorgeous Lloyd Loom piece is a must-have for their homes as well.
