If you install folding sliding door systems, read this information. Its useful information in helping the tradesperson specify, select and install the correct lintel for NUVU top hung oak folding door systems. Lintels must have at least 150mm bearing at each end onto the brickwork IE. The overall length of a lintel should at least be the sum of the opening width plus 300mm (minimum). The safe working load for the lintel must not be exceeded by the combined loads imposed by the structure (ie brickwork above, and the loads imposed by the weight of the folding sliding door leaves). When specifying the lintel it is necessary to advise the type of construction, the type and Thickness of the inner and outer brick/block and the width of the cavity. The additional loads, over and above the normal brickwork/blockwork imposed by the folding sliding patio doorsets will be a uniformly distributed Load (UDL) of 0.4kN (approx. 40 kg) per metre run for 44mm doors and 0.5kN (approx. 50kg) per metre for 54mm doors.
To be safe, when talking to the lintel supplier, if you advise them that the additional load over and above Normal loads, is 0.5kN/metre, then the supplier should confirm the correct lintel applicable. Normal structural loads imposed by the structure will include loads from roof trusses, floor joists and masonry. The load of the folding sliding patio doorset is normally applied through screws fixed through the head track, and head, of the Sliding Folding door frame. (Applicable to the more popular “top hung systems” like the NUVU, where the door folding sliding hardware runs in a track that is in the head of the doorset. This is the most popular method because the doors run very smoothly, where no grit or dirt can impair the NUVU folding door operation) NUVU Sliding Folding patio doorsets are normally supplied with special fixings for use when fitting into a pre-formed steel lintel only. With alternative lintels such as H Beams, other fixings should be used, that are of equal strength and qty to the fixings supplied by the system manufacturer.
