Why won't my garage door opener light turn on? There are four causes for the lights on a garage door opener not to come on. Contacts in the light socket If the light bulb has been replaced and the light is still not coming on, follow the steps below to pry out the contacts inside the light socket. Light Socket or Logic Board If the light is still not coming on, it could be the light socket or the logic board. To determine which one it is, follow the steps below. Note: This does not apply to garage door openers that use a work light that is separate from the garage door opener. Each opener is equipped with at least one light bulb (maximum of 100 watts each) which is controlled by the receiver logic board. The light(s) turns on when the opener is activated and turns off automatically. 4 ½ minutes is the standard delay but this can be adjusted using a Multi-Function door control, if one is installed. If your light consistently stays on, the reason may be as simple as the light button on your Multi-Function door control being accidentally pressed. You could also have a problem with your logic board or door control circuit. The Multi-Function door control is a panel on the inside wall of your garage that has a push button for operating the door, as well as a Lock and Light button. If the Light button has been pressed, just press and release the button again to turn off the light. See Multi-function door control light features.

If the garage door has been open and you have been walking in and out of the garage, you could be activating the safety light feature without knowing it. The safety light feature will activate the lights when the door is open and the safety sensors are crossed. If the beam has been crossed multiple times, it can give the appearance of a light that won't turn off. If you have a Multi-Function door control, it may have a motion detection feature. This would also explain why the light would stay on as long as there was movement or heat detected in the garage. Deactivate the feature while you are inside your garage if you do not want the light to stay on. Some troubleshooting will help determine the problem. Use the following steps: Determine the door control type by consulting the owner's manual. Reset the light timer to it's lowest setting (1½ minutes). Disconnect power from the unit, and disconnect door control wires from the opener.Light(s) should come on.

Allow 1½ minutes for light(s) to cycle off. If light(s) turn off after 1½ minutes, the problem lies with either the door control or wiring. Continue with step 5.  If the light stays on, it is the logic board. Disconnect power from unit. Remove door control from wall, connect to operator via a known good short pair of wires. Allow 1½ minutes for light(s) to cycle off.  If light turns off, it's a wire issue. If not, the door control should be replaced. How to Operate the Multi-Function Door Control My garage door opener light will not turn on How do I program the additional features for my remote control?Sign In to ManualsOnline Sign Up for ManualsOnlineA multi-function door control is necessary for setting light controls. A multi-function door control has a Light, Lock and a pushbutton to open and close the garage door. If you do not have a multi-function door control you will not be able to permanently change these light options. Refer to your manual to verify if your opener has these options.

NOTE: If you do not have a multi-function door control and wish to have the lights stop turning on while you are doing yard work or cleaning the garage, you can open your door and before it is fully open, press the door control to stop the door from opening completely. This will temporarily disable this feature until the system operates again. Please close and open your door again before entering or exiting the garage with your vehicle to eliminate any damage. Press the Light button to turn the opener light on or off. It will not control the opener lights when the door is in motion. If you turn it on and then activate the opener, the light will remain on for 4-1/2 minutes. Press again to turn it off sooner. The 4-1/2 minute interval can be changed to 1-1/2, 2-1/2, or 3-1/2 minutes as follows: The Lock button is also used to lock out the hand held remote controls. Once you have finished setting the light timer, ensure the light inside the door control is glowing steadily.
