This is the entry-level theme park for families with kids below the age of 12, with bucket-loads to keep toddlers happy. Now in its third decade, the theme park (on the former site of Windsor Safari Park) is owned by Merlin Entertainments - as so many are in Britain. But, set in lovely grounds, it still has some of the charm of its the original Danish parent park, with plenty of giraffes, crocodiles and pirates made out of Lego bricks scattered among the rides. • The ultimate guide to the UK's theme parks Lego Friends Heartlake City. Lego City has been given a mauve make over and is now home to a few attractions based on the Lego range aimed at girls. There's a shopping mall, and Olivia's House which has some rather unresponsive screens where you can 'bake' digital cakes. It feels very un-Lego. More successful is a great new ride, Mia's Riding Adventure, where you sit on a horse while being spun and flung high into the sky. Great for thrill seekers. A nice selection of gentle rides that pre-schoolers will love, and - as a result - a blissful lack of marauding teenagers.

Older kids are not completely ignored, as long as they don't mind getting wet: Pirate Falls and Raft Racers are splashingly-good fun. • 50 great days out in the UK The food is surprisingly decent with a some healthy options for children, especially at the Duplo family buffet. Miniland - various countries fashioned out of 40 million Lego, with amusing and clever little details - remains the highlight for many. Just a shame that some parts of it are looking a little faded. Fairy Tale Brook is genuinely charming for small children - a gentle bob in a boat, passing Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Little Pigs and other favourites made out of Lego Like many Merlin parks, the queues can be long on some rides. Too few staff on at many attractions doesn't help. Over an hour for Laser Raiders is standard. Paying £35 per person for a Q-Bot seems a ruinously expensive solution. Also, around every corner, there is another kiosk aimed at relieving you of your money: face-painting, fairground stalls, drying machines (after the wet rides).
